Doug Drost takes main at Golden Sands Speedway!

April 25, 1999; Plover, WI:  -  With Sunday afternoon being as warm as it was, many families joined in the festivities at Golden Sands Speedway.  Ten lucky kids were drawn from the Short Trax Jr. Fan Club to race in the first Short Trax go-cart races for the 1999 season.  Jordan Cooney was the Short Trax Fan of the Week, winning a trophy and Short Trax T-shirt.  Melissa Linzmeier won the mountain bike courtesy of Wal-Mart stores.  Congratulations to Melody and Alan Andreason, Save-On Furniture’s Fan of the Weeks.  The Andreason’s enjoyed watching the races from Golden Sands Speedway’s observation deck in two comfortable recliners courtesy of Save-On Furniture.

Doug Drost tops the Late Models at Golden Sands!!
	The man to catch this week was Doug Drost who paced the field the entire distance in the Super Late Model division.  Drost survived a late race yellow and the challenges of Monte Gress for the win on the high-banked third mile oval.

Golden Sands also took a few minutes of silence for good friend and a long time racing fan, Dave Murgatroyd.  Dave was tragically taken away from the racing community earlier this week in a traffic accident.  Dave and his father used to run the old Griffith Park Speedway, in Wisc. Rapids.

The Great North Legends joined the Golden Sands Team for some great racing action.  The 25-lap feature held a total of 23 cars!  With as small as the legend cars are, 23 in the feature left a lot of room for passing, and lapping!  Jim Bradle started out the feature with a good jump on the rest of the pack.  He was able to keep his lead up until the sixth lap, when Paul Menard zoomed around him.  At the time Menard was moving past Bradle, Brad Brandt saw an opportunity to move Bradle from the second to the third position. 

The Great North Legends put on a thrilling show for the fans as 23 cars took to the track for the feature event!! When the dust settled Paul Menard was the man in victory lane.

Bradle started losing more positions as Herman Greinig made his way to the front.  By lap 16 lapped traffic started coming into play, allowing cars to use this to maneuver to higher positions.  Matt Kocourek started using the lapped cars to place himself closer to the front runners.  With just five laps to go, Kocourek passed Greinig for the third position then started to work on Brandt.  By lap 23 Kocourek got around Brandt for the second position.  With two laps to go Menard was able to hold his position and take the win.  Kocourek finished second with Brandt in third and Greinig in fourth. 

With Greg Weinfurter shattering the super late model record last week, it seemed pretty unlikely that anyone would gain a new track record for this week.  Even thought no one did earn a new track record, Greg Weinfurter and Scot Fields came close to achieving it.   Greg Weinfurter ended up with fast time, once again, and opted to take the Hot n’ Now Challenge which at the time was up to $700.00!     

During the super late model feature, Doug Drost jumped out in front.  Monte Gress and Birthday Boy-Jeremy Lepak were both hot on his heels.  Most of the racing action was in the middle of the pack as Kevin Peterson, Kirby Kurth, and Chris Wimmer battled for positions.   Weinfurter was desperately trying to gain positions from the back of the pack.  Mark Eswein who also started in the back of the pack was maneuvering his way up to the front. 

By lap 22 Peterson, who had been losing positions, spun bringing out the yellow.  As the single file restart took place, Weinfurter jumped ahead two positions.  Eswein followed suit, trying to make it his second feature win in a row.  With just a few short laps to go, Drost held his position taking the win.  Monte Gress finished second, with Jeremy Lepak in third.  Mark Eswien finished fifth and Greg Weinfurter finished seventh.   Excellent job coming from the back of the pack in a field of 18 cars! 

Last years pure stock champion, Shawn Stelzer ended up with fast time, and opted to take the Letter Perfect Challenge, which was up to $300.00.  Randy Storlie started out in the lead during the 25 lap super stock feature.  By lap five Cale Laessig swung around Storlie for the lead, but by the very next lap Storlie took the lead back away from Laessig. 

In one of the most exciting races of the year Randy Storlie did battle with a strong field of Super Stocks.  Storlie would swap the lead back and forth with Cale Laessig before making it to the finish line first.

Keith Bohmsach and Mike Doughty started moving up from the back and started working on the leaders.  By lap 10, Stelzer was already up to the seventh position!  Merle Weinfurter started moving his way up to the front to play with the leaders.  By lap 15 Weinfurter was working on Bohmsach for the third position.  By lap 20, lapped traffic started coming into play, allowing cars to make sharp moves and steal positions away.  With the lapped traffic coming more visible, Stelzer took it around to the outside and advanced three positions! 

With three laps to go and Stelzer in third place, it looked like his fast car just might take the Letter Perfect Challenge, but Storlie and Laessig were just enough car lengths ahead to keep their positions.  Storlie took the checkered with Laessig and second, and Stelzer in an amazing third place from the back of the pack. 

The pure stock feature showed Brad Scholze in the lead at the jump of the feature, with Anney Turzinski right behind him.  By lap 8, Mark Flink made his way around Turzinski for the second position.  Veteran drivers started moving up the pack pushing slower cars out of their way.   New runner, John Matthews started up in front, but spun out by lap 5. 

Bradley Scholze had his sharp looking Mopar powered racer out front of the field when the checkered flag fell in the Pure Stock feature at Golden Sands Speedway!

Turzinski started losing positions fast, as Mike Brooks started coming up to the front.  With three laps to go Mike Brooks took the second position away from Flink.   Flink then lost that position to Marv Flick.   Sholze was able to hold his lead position and take the checkered.  Brooks ended up second with Flick in third and Flink in forth.
