Monte Gress wins Golden Sands Main event!

June 11, 1999; Plover, WI: - With threatening weather and rainstorms in the surrounding cities, Mother Nature let the show go on once again at Golden Sands Speedway. The Short Trax Jr. Fan Club Races were held off until next week, because of the threat of inclement weather. The Short Trax Jr. Fan of the Week was Scott Moen II. Our Wal-mart bike winner was Dylan Haegeral. Congratulations to both.

The legend cars took the field once again at the Power Playground. Dwayne Vetrone started with the lead, but soon fell a few positions behind as Galen Manternach and Charlie Menard made their way to the front. Fast runner Paul Menard also started making his way to the front of the pack. Vetrone started moving back to the front of the pack to regain his lead. By the 11^th lap, Vetrone was back in the top position. But, Paul Menard was closing in. With just five short laps to go, Paul Menard made his move around Vetrone for the lead. Charlie Menard followed suit and snuck into the second position. Paul finished first with Charlie in second and Vetrone in third.

Mark Eswein pulled fast time this evening and opted to take the Hot n’ Now Ultimate Challenge, which was up to $1,300! The late model feature went start to finish with no cautions! What excitement. Monte Gress started out in the lead. Gress wanted a win so bad, since last weeks race was lost to Mark Eswein on the very last lap. Scott Beyer was hanging on to the second position with Doug Drost in third. Greg Weinfurter started making his way up to the front to work on the leaders.

Eswein was struggling in the back of the pack trying to get around some of the slower cars. Gress started pulling ahead from the rest of the pack, as all the fast runners were fighting slower traffic. Jeremy Lepak moved around Drost for the third position. Kirby Kurth and Chris Wimmer moved up as Weinfurter started losing positions. Eswein was up to the seventh position by lap 20. By the 23^rd lap, lapped traffic came into play. Because of the lapped traffic, Beyer lost five positions backwards, along with Lepak and Drost. Kurth and Wimmer took advantage of the lapped traffic on the outside and moved ahead. Eswein started coming up fast.

With six laps to go and Eswein in the fifth position, it looked like he just may have a slim chance on winning the progressive pot, but Gress was to far ahead. Monte Gress took the checkered, with Kurth in second and Wimmer in third. Eswein finished in fifth.

Judd Brandl (#27) found some extra speed tonight and make off with his first CWSSA Super Stock win of the season at Golden Sands Speedway. Brandl also turned in the third fastest qualifying time of the evening.

Jason Kirsling was the fast timer of the night in the super stock division. He opted to take the Letter Perfect Challenge which was up to $150! The race between the Jason’s’ continues. Jason Szymkowiak and Jason Kirsling battled out the 1998-racing season for the championship. Kirsling came out the victor. Thus far during the 1999-racing season, Szymkowiak was the first super stock to take the Letter Perfect Challenge home, and Kirsling wants to take home the same title, plus some additional cash.

Jim Cormack started out in the leading position with Alan Sankey directly behind him. Fast runner Judd Brandl quickly overtook Cormack and Sankey for the lead position. Mike Doughty, sick and tired of his car breaking down, followed suit and ended up in the second position. Keith Bohmsach maneuvered his way around Doughty and started running in second. By the half way mark lapped traffic came into play moving positions around. Shawn Stelzer and Cale Laessig were able to move ahead, but Sankey ended up losing quite a few positions backwards. Brandl held on to the lead. Doughty struggled to get around Bohmsach for the second position. As the white flag fell, Stelzer stole the third position away from Doughty. Brandl finished first, with Bohmsach in second and Stelzer in third.

Current Pure Stock point leader Michael Brooks (#22) scored the feature win in tonight's action on the third-mile high banked asphalt oval.

New racer Matt Osowski started out in front, but was quickly overtaken by some of the veteran races. Mike Brooks, Anney Turzinski and new racer John Matthews started vying for lead positions. Matthews a new racer, purchased last years fast runner, Jim Stratton’s old number eight car. Matthews is keeping up the tradition of the car being fast. Turzinski maneuvered around Matthews for the second position. Gruber and Flick, both with a few years racing experience maneuvered around Matthews for top positions. Brooks took the checkered with Turzinski in second and Gruber in third.

Racing continues on Friday evenings at Central Wisconsin's Power Playground, Golden Sands Speedway. Our racetrack is a high-banked 1/3 mile asphalt oval featuring Super Late Models, CWSSA Super Stocks and Pure Stocks.
