Wimmer ignites Super Late Model main!

May 12, 2000; Plover, WI -  The weather was fair and pretty windy, but it did not keep the die-hard race fans from joining in on the 2nd Annual WDEZ Night at the races. A big congratulations to Brad Downs, the Short Trax Jr. Fan of the Week, and Eric McGregor the winner of the Wal-Mart gift certificate.

Chris Wimmer (#52) found the fast lane and won the Super Late Model feature event!

Jeremy Lepak spun fast time in the Super Late Model division. Jeremy spun fast times quite a bit during the 1999 season and was the only Late Model to win the Hot n’ Now Challenge. Of course Jeremy opted to take the challenge this week, which was up to $700.00!

Kirby Kurth took the early lead in the Super Late Model 30 Lap feature, rookie driver Judd Brandl was right behind him. Kurth had troubles taking the corners, which pushed Brandl back and gave way to The Gun-Todd Stapleman. Kurth still was having troubles in the corners, which created everyone to break check behind him. Finally Chris Wimmer said enough is enough and took the outside groove to get around everyone. He started passing cars like they were standing still.

By lap 17, Wimmer got around Stapleman and Kurth for the lead. Brandl fell back to fourth. Wimmer started powering it. He was practically a half a track ahead of the rest of the pack. With only ten short laps to go, it looked like lapped traffic might come into play. Stapleman finally took the outside and maneuvered his way around Kurth for the second position. Jeff Weinfurter and Mark Eswein followed suit. Congrats go to Eswein.

In a hurry he put his smashed racer back together, won the semi feature after a bad timing lap, and was finishing high in the feature after advancing from the semi. Wimmer maintained his lead as the rest of the pack shuffled for position. Wimmer took the checkered with Stapleman in second and Weinfurter in third.

Keith Bohmsach took fast time and even opted to take the Letter Perfect challenge, which was only $50.00, due to Randy Storlie winning it the week before. Bohmsach sure is a trooper!

Jason Kirsling (#99) made his way to an early lead and won the Super Stock feature event.

Todd Peterson took the early lead with Merle Weinfurter directly behind him. Alan Sankey quickly over took Peterson and Weinfurter for the lead with fast runners Randy Storlie and Jason Kirsling behind him. Kirsling and Storlie battled it out. By the tenth lap Kirsling took the lead with Sankey in second and Storlie in third. Sankey started having car problems and headed into the pits with Scott Hamel and Keith Bohmsach joining the front of the pack.

Bohmsach was able to get around Hamel for the third position with just five laps to go. With lapped traffic coming into play, it looked like Bohmsach just might have a slim chance of winning the feature and the challenge. As the checkered flag fell Kirsling maintained the lead and took the win, but in a neck and neck finish Bohmsach was just a hair ahead of Storlie for the second spot. Great job Keith. Storlie finished third.

Veteran driver Marv Flick took fast time in the Pure Stock division and opted to take the CarQuest Challenge, which was up to $200.00.

Second year driver Michael Somers (#15) is really getting the hang of the Pure Stock division.  Tonight he made his way to the winner's circle on two occasions as he won both the dash and the feature race.

Mark Flink took the early lead with Chris Brooks and Jason Lewandowski right behind him. Mike Somers just a new racer in the 1999 season, started motoring up to the front of the pack. Marv Flick also started hammering it to the front. It certainly looked like Flick was going to win the Challenge. With all the veteran racers battling it up in front, a lot of the rookies were battling for position in mid-pack. Brad Scholze joined the front of the pack to try to take the lead.

With four laps to go Somers took the lead with Scholze and Flick changing second and third positions respectively. Somers took the checkered with Scholze in second. Flick would have taken second or third, but got to anxious coming out of turn four and lost it giving the third position to Duane Robinson.

A new face showed up in victory lane, as the 4-cylinder Mini-Stock class was on hand this evening.  Chris Boykins (#2) topped a strong field of cars to win the main event.

The Cenex 4-Cylinders came out to play at Golden Sands. Paul Berg took the lead in the feature event by was quickly overtaken by Steve Cottrell. Close to the half way point Cottrell and John Bell tangled and sent to the back of the pack. This gave the lead to Bob Gereau, and second to Chris Boykins. John Bell came back from the pits and started moving up the pack like a banshee.

Gereau maintained his lead with Boykins in second. Bell made it up to the leaders once again to work on the lead, but there just was not enough laps left. But a big pat on the back goes out to Bell for moving up from the back of the pack to the front two times! Gereau took the checkered with Boykins in second and Bell in third.
