August 24, 2001; Plover, WI - Tons of fans came out for the Channel 9 Fan Appreciation Night. Turtle Lake Casino brought out their Wheel of Fortune giving fans a chance to spin to win. Many other sponsors brought out prizes for the fans. Late Model driver Charlie Schwock, gave away a tv/vcr combo to a lucky fan. Congrats to Don Sommers for winning the tv/vcr combo.
Jeremy Lepak spun fast time and went for the Hot n Now
Challenge which was up $1900! Frank Nitzke took the early lead with Joe Krzykowski hot on his heels. Allen Check tried to move into Krzykowskis position, but Krzykowski held on tight. By the tenth lap, Krzykowski and Check got into each other bringing the rest of the pack into a brake fest. MG Gajewski and Brandon Selle both wrecked and could not finish. All the other cars retained their positions at the restart. Nitzke retained his lead with Greg Weinfurter right behind him. Monte Gress and Jason Weinkauf moved up looking at the top spots. Gary Back started putting the pedal to the metal and moved up to the
third position. As the faster cars started
moving up from the back of the pack a caution came out for Burton Brown and Allen Check. Nitzke kept his lead at the restart with three
short laps to go. Greg Weinfurter tried hard
to pass him, but was not able to do it in such a short time. Nitzke took the checkered with Greg Weinfurter in
second and Back in third. Jason Kirsling spun fast time opting to take the Mobil Link Challenge
which was up to $950. Jeremy Szymkowiak and Dave Pagles exchanged leads lap after lap in the closest super stock race ever. All drivers stayed tight together for pretty much the entire race. Drivers would start going to the outside, but then moved back in the turns before making a three wide pass in the tight turns. Fast drivers caught in the back and middle of the pack looked desperately for a chance to make a move to get ahead into the front. A caution came out with just three laps left, sending Mike Doughty
into the pits with a banged up race car. Szymkowiak
took the lead at the restart with Pagels right at his side.
Symkowiak kept the lead on the white flag but Pagels was able to get ahead
of him on the checkered. Szymkowiak finished
second with Randy Storlie. John Matthews took fast time once again. He probably is one of the very few drivers that
has taken fast time so many times in a season. Matthews
opted to take the 8th Street Auto/Navy Challenge which was only up to $50, since Matthews
won it two weeks before. Jim Koback took the lead at the start of the feature, with Kevin Hill
right behind him. Matthews started moving up
fast from the back of the pack, looking at trying to take another win. Rain started moving in and by the sixth lap a
caution came out for Dan Gollen and Russ Hebel. As
the cars realigned the rain started to drop, and the checkred flag came out ending the
race. Koback took the win with Hill in
second and Craig Nigh in third. Next week, August 31st will be the 6th Annual Coca-Cola Season Championship.
