August 1, 2003; Plover, WI - It was a fine evening of racing at Golden Sands Speedway on Kwik Trip/ Tobacco Outlet Night, and for the second straight week every feature race ran from green to checkered without a caution. The fast paced program was completed before 10 p.m. Heading the list of winners this evening was Allen Check who scored his second Super Late Model victory of the 2003 season. Check worked by early race leader Monte Gress and then drove a smooth race for the victory. In Super Stock action, Mike Doughty earned his first feature win of the year made a stunning three wide pass created when race leader Scott Hamel slid sideways while leading the event. Doughty took advantage of the situation and bolted into the lead. He then drove a flawless race to score the win. In 4 Cylinder action Adam Krzykowski turned a last lap charge into a victory, having taken the lead in their feature event on the final lap.
In preliminary action, Jeff Weinfurter set quick time with a lap of 12.175 seconds. He chose to take the Basseuner Excavating Challenge which was up to $1,500 should he manage to come from the rear of the field and score a victory in the feature race. Weinfurter was unable to take the prize finishing 10th in the main event. In Super Stock action, Tim Hintz turned in fast time for the fifth time this season, but decided not to take the Coor's Light challenge which was up to $750. In the 4 Cylinders, Adam Krzykowski did take the Plover Auto Body challenge and his win in the feature race from the tail of the field netted the rookie driver an extra $250. With preliminary action concluded, 16 Super Late Models took to the track for their feature contest which was contested at 40 laps. Monte Gress and Frank Nitzke brought the field to the green with Gress holding the inside line and Nitzke running his preferred high groove. Gress would pace the opening circuits before Nitzke would lead at the line on lap three. Nitzke had just motored to the front position when he slid up the track in turn four allowing several of the leaders to pass. This left Gress, Allen Check, Jeremy Lepak in the top three, while Nitzke fought to regain his momentum and wound up in a battle with Brandon Selle for the fourth spot. After fending off the challenges of Lepak, Check began to work the low groove under Gress who was running a higher line in the lead. Check's car worked the low groove to perfection and he would wind up wheel to wheel with Gress for the lead on lap eight. On lap 14 Check would complete the pass and take the top spot. Gress soon found himself challenged for the second spot as Lepak began to work him over for the runner-up position. Gress however was up to the challenge and stayed in the second position as the race reached the halfway point. With the lead trio of Check, Gress and Lepak holding their positions the attention turned to Mark Eswein who was slicing through traffic. Eswein reached fourth at Nitzke's expense with 15 laps to go. Three laps later he got under Lepak for the third position and then started to erase the advantage Gress has on him for second. This left Check comfortable out front as the race wound down. Eswein was able to work under Gress for second with two laps to go, but the gap between he and Check, the race leader was nearly a dozen car lengths. Check reached the line first for the win, with Eswein having to settle for second. Gress drove a strong race to finish third. Jason Weinkauf made a late race charge to reach fourth and Lepak rounded out the top five runners. The Super Stock feature saw 16 cars take the green flag. Brian Stroik and Scott Hamel reached the line in a dead heat the first couple laps of the main event before Scott Hamel nosed ahead to claim the lead. Hamel began to scoot away slightly, while Doughty worked the outside lane to secure the second spot at Stroik's expense on lap three. Stroik a couple more spots when Brad Scholze and Keith Bohmsach slipped past on lap 7. Out front Hamel had his hands full with Doughty closing up on his rear bumper. While Doughty appeared to have a quicker car, Hamel drover around the high baked oval in flawless fashion to keep him at bay. Scholze, Bohmsach and current point leader Shawn Stelzer made up the top five runners at the halfway point as the laps quickly flew by. It appeared Hamel would be able to fend off his rivals until he got loose in turn two with 9 laps remaining. Several cars slowed to allow Hamel to gather up his ride, while several others stayed on the gas to take advantage of the situation. The end results was a major reshuffling of the lead positions. Scholze had the cleanest shot at the lead charging to the top spot. Doughty cleared Hamel high and charged into the second position with Doughty settling into third. Hamel recovered but not before falling out of the top five as the race stayed green. Kirsling applied the pressure to Scholze as he sought to find a way by on the inside. Doughty meanwhile opted to run the high line in his battle with Bohmsach for the third position. With three laps to go Kirsling brushed Scholze, temporarily slowing the leader. This allowed Doughty to surge ahead in the outside lane, and with two laps to go, Doughty and Scholze were now side by side for the lead. Doughty using the momentum of the outside line slowly moved ahead as the white flag flew. Bohmsach followed in Doughty's tire tracks in an effort to pass Scholze for the runner-up spot on the final lap. Doughty would reach the stripe and take the win in an exciting finish. Bohmsach would secure second while Kirsling would edge out Scholze by inches at the line for third. In spite of a very strong performance, Scholze would have to settle for fourth ahead of Him Cormack who rounded out the top five. Tim Hintz, the evenings fastest qualifier scored sixth. In 4 cylinder action it appeared Eric Kluever would earn his first feature win of the 2003 season as he had built up a solid lead by the midway point of the contest, and fast qualifier Adam Krzykowski was mired deep in traffic. However, the complexion of the race changed a good deal with five laps to go when Jenny Nitzsche and he mother Tory Nitzsche traded paint while doing battle for second. Krzykowski would scoot by the pair for second and quickly set his sights on Kluever. As the white flag flew Krzykowski swept to the outside of Kluever and on the final laps he motored ahead to claim the win. Kluever who had paced all but the final lap would settle for second. Mom proved she knew best as Torey Nitzsche bested her daughter Jenny for third.
