Jason Weinkauf Hangs Tough for Super Late Victory at Sands!
Kallman Captures Second Career Super Stock Checkered!

Plover, WI - An
amazingly fast paced program clicked off before a solid showing of fans during the
Coca-Cola Night at the races. The final checkered flag flew at 9:45 p.m. as the
feature races had but a single yellow flag all evening. In Super Late Model action
Jason Weinkauf would find Frank Nitzke on his rear bumper the final 10 laps of the
contest. But he would set a pace just out of reach for Nitzke and score his second
victory of the 2004 season.

Jason Weinkauf (#76) garnered his second Super
Late Model feature victory of the 2004 season at Golden Sands Speedway.
After a restart Jason Weinkauf (#76) had to fend
off his older brother (#75) Chris Weinkauf to maintain the lead of the Super Late Model
feature.
Frank Nitzke (#18) turned in an impressive performance slicing through the field to
finish second. He's shown passing Chris Weinkauf late in the feature race.
John Totzke Jr. (#8) had an up and down evening. On the up side he won his Super
Late Model heat early in the evening. The downside, was an unfortunate accident
which collected his machine and resulted in two wreckers assisting it from the racing
surface.
A graduate of the Super Stock division, Jason
Kirsling (#99) made his way to the winner's circle with an experimental crate engine
machine. Kirsling was first acrossed the line in the Super Late Model semi-feature.
Current point leader and defending champion Mark Eswein (#71) set fast time in the
Super Late Models this evening.
Wally Kallman (#77) captured his second career
Super Stock feature win. The second year driver won his first feature just a couple
weeks ago.
Wally Kallman (#77) uses the outside line to pass Tim Zuehlke (#70) for the lead of
the Super Stock feature late in the race, while Bradley Scholze (#87) gives chase.
David Pagels was a double winner this evening winning his heat and the semi-feature
in the Super Stock division.
Just like last week Scott Strigel (#46) set fast qualifying honors and later won
the feature in Pure Stock action.
Two man Cruiser winners this evening included the teams of Wrege and Schmidt, while
the final checkered flag of the night was captured by Wisinski and Szymkowiak (#29). |
In the Super Stock division, second year racer Wally Kallman continued to
establish himself as a division front runner. Using the outside groove Kallman worked his
way to the lead late in the contest, and motored away from the field for his second career
feature victory. The Pure Stock main event turned into a battle between the current
division point leader Eric Nelson and the evening's fast qualifier Scott Strigel.
Strigel would make a pass for the lead in the closing laps and take the victory after a
thrilling battle.
The 40 lap Super Late Model main event ran by at a furious pace, with only a single
caution to slow the pace.
Rookie Dillion Kralovetz, a 16 year old driver, with an extensive background in kart
racing sat on the pole for the contest next to veteran racer Monte Gress. Gress, managed
to get the jump on the youngster, taking the initial lead.
Meanwhile the Weinkauf brothers were making quick headway with Jason leading his older
brother Chris through traffic. They would run third and fourth respectively by lap
lap two. On the very next circuit Jason's charge brought him alongside Kralovetz,
and with a swift inside move Jason Weinkauf was in second before the start of lap three.
Gress meanwhile has built a small cushion, but Jason Weinkauf quickly sliced into that
lead and the battle for the top spot began on lap 12. Gress opted to use the high
line around the track, but Jason Weinkauf managed to get a good run in the bottom groove
and was out front when lap 13 began.
Gress now had another Weinkauf to worry about as Chris began to contest the runner-up
spot. The laps clicked off quickly and at the halfway point the leaderboard showed,
Jason Weinkauf, Gress, Chris Weinkauf, Frank Nitzke in just his second showing this year,
and Jeremy Lepak in the top five positions.
Unfortunately for Gress, the lone caution would appear for him, as he spun in turn one
on lap 22 while running second. As a result the Weinkauf brothers Jason and Chris
were at the head of the pack for the restart with Nitzke, Lepak and Jeff Weinfurter in
tow.
The two brothers did battle briefly before Jason again established himself as race
leader. Nitzke meanwhile began to show his intention to try and reach the front
working on Chris Weinkauf for the runner-up spot. Nitzke would make the pass using
the outside line, one which he prefers with 13 laps to go in the contest.
In the remaining distance Nitzke managed to close within a car length of Jason
Weinkauf, but Jason never wavered in his line around the high banked oval. As a
result Jason Weinkauf reached the finish line a car length ahead of Nitzke for his second
victory of the year. Nitzke would settle for runner-up honors after a very strong
performance. Chris Weinkauf finished comfortably ahead of a grouping of cars in
third. At the wire, Lepak, Weinfurter and the evening's fast qualifier and current
point leader Mark Eswein, made up the top six finishers.
The Super Stock main event would go 30 laps from green to checkered without a single
slowdown, as the field of 16 drivers ran a flawless race.
Matt Raykowski and Tim Zuehlke brought the field to the green flag making up the front
row. Zuehlke would take the initial lead with Raykowski settling into the runner-up
spot. Further back in the field the faster qualifiers were beginning to march
forward.
Among those was Wally Kallman who worked the outside line to advance to fourth by lap
four. The field finally broke the pack style racing by the eighth round, with
Zuehlke holding the top spot by four car lengths over Raykowski. Kallman would reach
third on lap eleven and moments later began to pressure Raykowski for second.
At exactly the halfway point Kallman worked to the inside of Raykowski, pulling off a
smooth pass for runner-up honors. The chase was now on as Zuehlke had a margin of
five car lengths on a hard charging Kallman.
Kallman was able to close and the final pass of the race occurred with five laps to go
as Kallman worked the high line to nose ahead of Zuehlke after several laps of side by
side racing. Over the final circuits Kallman would sprint ahead and reach the finish
with a six car length advantage over Zuehlke. Steve Scholze made his presence felt
over the final circuits moving up to challenge Zuehlke for runner-up honors falling just
short and settling for third. Current point lead Shawn Stelzer would claim fourth
with Tim Hintz and Raykowski making up the top six runners.
The Pure Stock main event would also go from green to checkered with no cautions, in
spite of some harmless spins. The drivers did an excellent job of getting off the
racing surface before rejoining the contest each time a spin occurred.
The division point leader Eric Nelson looked to be in control of the contest until late
in the race when fast qualifier Scott Strigel closed the gap and muscled his way to the
front with only a handful of laps remaining. Strigel would set the pace the
remaining distance for the win. Nelson held onto second ahead of Troy Engman, Andrew
Hintz and Dean Aschbacher.
The evening concluded with a pair of 2-Man Cruiser contests, with only a single caution
flying for the races. The team of Wrege and Schmidt would capture the first contest,
while Wisinski and Szymkowiak made their trip to victory lane after winning the second
event.
Next Friday evening is Schierl Companies Night at the races. The evening will
feature a full program of Super Late Model, Super Stock, Pure Stock and 4 Cylinders
activities. Also highlighting the evenings activities will be the extremely popular Bus
Races.
Friday evening shows begin with qualifying at 6:30 p.m., and racing at 7:45 p.m.
On Friday evening July 30th, will be the final appearance of the Wisconsin Challenge
Series this season at Golden Sands Speedway. The finest Super Late Model drivers in
the Midwest will be on hand to challenge the local contingent. At the last event
visiting driver Charlie Menard edged past defending track champion Mark Eswein in the
closing laps to take the main event.
This show will feature a 100 lap feature contest, along with a pair of 30 lap
qualifying race. Also on the agenda for the evening will be the Wisconsin Sport
Trucks. The Snowmobile engine powered, mini race trucks have proven their capability
with three and four wise racing around the high banked oval. Also joining the
program will be the Pure Stocks and the 2-Man Cruisers.
The usual starting times are in place with qualifying at 6:30 p.m., and the first green
flag waving at 7:45 p.m.
