Krzykowski Outduels Weinfurter for Sands Super Late Win!
Hintz Hustles to Super Stock Victory!

Plover, WI - During
the closing laps of the Super Late Model main event on Schierl Companies Night at Golden
Sands Speedway, fans would have not noticed if there was any seating at the racetrack, for
no one was sitting in them. The evening's fast qualifier Jeff Weinfurter, and
20+ year racing veteran Joe Krzykowski, but on a duel that will leave fans talking for
years to come as they fought for supremacy in the 40 lap main event. In the end
Krzykowski would slip past Weinfurter to garner his second feature win of the 2004 season
on the high banked third mile oval. In Super Stock action, Tim Hintz would capture
his third feature win of 2004 in convincing fashion. Current 4 cylinder point leader
Mike Oehmichen captured the main event in that division, and Troy Engman completed the
evening's winners with a victory in the Pure Stock feature. The final checkered flag
of the evening flew in the ever popular Bus Races, with regular Super Late Model pilot
Keith Bohmsach piloting his mammoth machine to victory.

Joe Krzykowski (#77) was all smiles after
winning hard fought battle in the Super Late Model main event. It was the second win of
the season for veteran racer Krzykowski.
In the closing laps Jeff Weinfurter (#3) tried
in vain to fend off the challenges of hard charging Joe Krzykowski (#77).
Super Late Model rookie Keith Bohmsach (#24x)
set the pace during the opening stages of the Super Late Model feature before Jeff
Weinfurter (#3) and Joe Krzykowski (#77) slipped past.
Greg Back (#62) took top honors this evening in the Super Late Model semi-feature
race.

Tim Hintz (#1) has had a solid showing here in the mid-portions of the season.
He collected another Super Stock feature win Friday evening.

Tim Plowman (#80) set fast qualifying honors and later finished second in the Super
Stock feature. That performance put him in a tie for the point lead with Shawn
Stelzer.
The Busses thrilled the fans as they races around the high-banked third mile oval.

Super Late Model chauffeur Keith Bohmsach was the man to catch this evening in the
Busses as he topped the main event in the behemoth machines.
Troy Engman (#99) took the lead at the halfway point of the Pure Stock feature and
went on to win the event.
Mike Oehmichen swept the evening setting fast time and winning the feature in 4
cylinder action. |
The Super Late Main event placed Monte Gress and rookie Keith Bohmsach on the
front row at the drop of the green flag. Bohmsach would motor to the initial lead
while the balance of the field began to sort itself out. Fellow rookie competitor
Nicholas Anderson garnered the runner-up spot and the two freshman drivers began to pull
away from the pack behind. Meanwhile Weinfurter made several good moves after
starting in the 12th spot to find himself challenging for a top five position by the fifth
round.
Weinfurter would continue his charge working past Jeremy Lepak for the third spot on
lap eight just prior to the first caution of the event which occurred when Jason Weinkauf
and Benjamin Brinkman locked hors on the backstretch and slid into the infield on lap 10.
Both were able to continue when action resumed.
When the green flag unfurled Weinfurter immediately went to work on the rookie drivers
ahead of him. Weinfurter would slip past Anderson on the high side for second and
began pursuit of Bohmsach who continued to show the way. A bit further back
Krzykowski began to pick off cars reaching fourth on lap 15. Krzykowski reached
third at Anderson's expense on lap 19 and he then set out after the lead duo.
Out front Bohmsach has his hands full, using the outside line in an attempt to fend off
Weinfurter's challenges, while Krzykowski closed the gap to make it a three car battle for
the lead. The torrid pace got a break on lap 23 when Lepak spun after contact with
Chris Weinkauf.
The race resumed quickly and Bohmsach again set the pace. Weinfurter opted to
test the outside line this time in an attempt to garner the lead, and the decision proved
to be correct as he motored past Bohmsach for the lead with 13 laps to go. Bohmsach.
Behind them Krzykowski and Allen Check contested the third spot, with Check getting
a temporary advantage. The pair would then work by Bohmsach dropping him to fourth
as an exciting finish was beginning to setup among the leaders.
Krzykowski again began to flex some muscle, working the outside groove and rallying
back into the second position passing Check on the high side with 10 laps to go.
Krzykowski, determined to get the lead, closed rapidly on Weinfurter.
Weinfurter, would hold the point, making sure Krzykowski wouldn't find an opening as
the laps began to wind down. The lead duo thrilled the fans while scrapping for the
top spot, exchanging paint in the process. The battle got a brief reprieve when Greg
Back spun with nine laps remaining forcing a final caution.
The final nine laps would be worth the price of admission this evening as Weinfurter
and Krzykowski thrilled the fans with their duel. Weinfurter maintained supremacy
until four laps remained when Krzykowski worked to his inside stealing the lead.
From there to the finish Krzykowski would set the pace scoring a thrilling victory.
Weinfurter would settle for second. The third position was contested right down to
the wire with Check managing to fend off a fast closing Jason Weinkauf for third.
Weinkauf, Bohmsach and current point leader Mark Eswein made up the top six runners.
The Super Stock feature contest was sprinkled with a few cautions to slow the pace, but
the action was very intense. Matt Raykowski would set the initial pace. While pack
style racing continued through the field. Collin Wilcott, a rookie contender in the
class would reach the second spot on lap three.
Tim Hintz would work traffic to reach the top five by the sixth round and the field
began to settle into a single file format. Hintz would continue to press forward
reaching fourth on lap 10, and then working the high groove past Tim Zuehlke for third on
the following lap.
A spin by Dan Gollen slowed the pace briefly on lap 13 but racing quickly resumed.
On the restart Hintz went right to the outside line motoring past Wilcott and
Raykowski for the lead before lap 16 began. The pace slowed again as Gollen's
troubles continued. This time he slid off the track in turn four and hit the front
stretch wall on lap 20. Gollen was unhurt but he was done for the evening after the
accident.
The final caution occurred with seven laps to go when current point leader Shawn
Stelzer and Zuehlke made contact while doing battle for fourth, resulting in a spin by
Stelzer. Both drivers would resumed the race from the rear of the field.
The leaderboard would show Hintz, Raykowski, Wilcott, Tim Plowman and Dave Neitzke in
the top five for the sprint to the checkered. Hintz would pull away to a comfortable
lead, while Plowman went charging toward the front picking off Wilcott and Raykowski in
quick fashion. Hintz however would reach the stripe first for the win. Plowman
claimed second, and the effort, coupled with Stelzer's misfortune place both he and
Stelzer in a tie for the point lead in the division. Raykowski, Wilcott and Neitzke
would complete the top five runners.
In Pure Stock feature action, current point leader Eric Nelson would set the pace until
mechanical troubles slowed his machine mid-race. Troy Engman would scoot past for
the top spot which he would hold to the finish. Nelson would drop from the contest
in the closing laps while running in second, giving the runner-up finish to Jeff Burrows.
Fast qualifier Scott Strigel would finish third after winning the past two feature
contest for the class. Andrew Hintz and Shane Floistad completed the top five.
The 4 cylinder contest turned into a two car showdown between Mike Oehmichen and Scott
Stelzer. Over the final laps Stelzer was able to slowly slice into Oehmichen's lead,
but with just two laps to go, Stelzer had a piece of his machines exhaust system let
loose. This allowed Oehmichen to pull away slightly to score the win by 4 cars
lengths. Stelzer would settle for second, while Thomas Masephol, Matt Hansen and
Randy Polansky completed the top five.
Next Friday evening the Golden Sands Speedway welcomes back the Wisconsin Challenge
Series Super Late Model program. Top racers from around the upper Midwest will
gather to challenge the Golden Sands Speedway regulars in a 100 lap main event featuring
22 cars.
In the series last appearance on Memorial Day, LaCrosse Fairgrounds Speedway point
leader Charlie Menard swept past defending Golden Sands Speedway champion Mark Eswein to
grab the victory. Eswein is the series current point leader heading into the show,
with veteran racer Don "Thunder" Turner, a regular at Dells Motor Speedway
currently second in points. Minnesota hotshoe Adam Royle, current lies third in
points after winning the most recent WCS event at Marshfield Speedway a couple weeks ago.
Local favorites Jeremy Lepak, Jeff Weinfurter, the Weinkauf brothers and
Allen Check will be attempting to defend the home turf again a strong field of WCS
regulars including Ken Reiser, M.G. Gajewski, John Zimmermann, Terry Baldry, Brian Johnson
Jr. and Terry Van Roy.
While the 100 lap main event is the main show, a pair of equally important 30 lap
qualifying races will set the field for the big event..
Joining the Super Late Models will be the tracks own 4 cylinder division and 2-Man
Cruiser classes, while the snowmobile engine powered Wisconsin Sport Trucks will
participate with a full sow of their own. The mini-pickup truck bodied racers have
thrilled fans with four and five wide racing around the high banked oval.
Friday evening shows begin with qualifying at 6:30 p.m., and racing at 7:45 p.m.
