Check Charges to Another Sands Super Late Victory!
Storlie Scores in Super Stocks!

Plover, WI - I
was a combination of being in the right place at the right time, coupled with a solid
pace, that brought Allen Check his third Super Late Model feature win of the 2005 season
at Golden Sands Speedway. Check found himself behind the lead pair of Jeff
Weinfurter and Mark Eswein near the mid-portion of the main event when the lead duo
tangled, giving Check the lead position. Check then was able to fend off a late race
charge by Joe Krzykowski to score his second win in three weeks on the high-banked
third-mile Golden Sands Speedway.

Allen Check (#20) has been on a roll this season
in Super Late Model action at Golden Sands Speedway. He wrapped up his third feature
event win of the 2005 season this past Friday evening.

Jeff Weinfurter (#3) and defending champion Mark
Eswein (#71) did battle for the lead in the Super Late Model feature, until a tangle
relegated them to the tail of the field.

Jeff Weinfurter (#3) outran Keith Bohmsach (#24)
for the early lead in the Super Late Model feature contest.
Burton Brown (#07) captured the Super Late Model Semi-feature.
Allen Check (#20) proved he was fast this evening taking his first fast qualifying
effort of the 2005 season and then coming back to win the feature contest.
Randy Storlie (#53) got edged out for the Super
Stock feature win last week, but this week he was up to the challenge taking the
checkered.
Randy Storlie (#53) fends off the challenges of Tim Zuehlke (#70) on his way to
winning the Super Stock semi-feature.
Ken Soyka (#30) took his turn in victory lane winning the Super Stock semi-feature.

Wes Coon (#51) turned in his first career fast qualifying effort to start the
program out in the Super Stock division.

Ricky Brandl (#43) set fast time and then came back to win the feature in 4
cylinder action..

Three features... six winners! The drivers victorious in the 2-Man Cruiser
events this evening included the teams of Wierzba/Wierzba (#44), Kuhn/Michaels(#86)
and Adams/Omernik (#108). |
In Super Stock action, Randy Storlie would score his first
feature win of the 2005 season having to fend off the challenges of Tim Zuehlke and Galen
Manternatch. In 4 cylinder action Ricky Brandl nearly scored a clean sweep in the
class, setting fast time and winning the feature contest. Only a second place finish
in his heat race kept him from accomplishing that fete. The evening concluded with a
trio of 2-Man Cruiser events which were captured in turn by the teams of Adams and
Omernik, Kuhn and Michaels, and division point leaders Wierzba and Wierzba. Just
after the conclusion of the 2-Man Cruiser event, light rain, which had delayed the
evening's program by 30 minutes earlier in the night, began to fall. The fast paced
program was completed by 10:00 p.m., in spite of the rain delay.
Jeff Weinfurter and Keith Bohmsach comprised the front row for the
start of the 40 lap Super Late Model main event with Weinfurter getting the upper hand at
the start. Troy Nelson would take up residence in the third position. Mark Eswein
the defending track champion would rumble into the fourth spot as the opening laps clicked
off.
Nelson and Eswein would work the high groove past Bohmsach on the
third lap to secure the second and third spots, while giving chase to race leader
Weinfurter. Check, the evenings fast qualifier also found himself moving forward
quickly reaching the top five. 14 year old racer Melvin Zehr, who was visiting from
Florida began to have part of his exhaust begin to drag on the track. Moments later
the offending part fell off the car resulting in a caution to remove the debris.
When the race resumed Weinfurter went back to the lead with Nelson
and Eswein in tow. Nelson slipped up the raceway allowing Eswein to climb into
second on lap seven. Check meanwhile had dispatched Bohmsach to run fourth. Another small
slide by Nelson dropped him back further in the pack elevating Check to the third spot.
Back at the front of the pack Weinfurter had his hands full fending
off the challenges of Eswein while Check watched from his third place viewpoint.
Preferring the higher line Weinfurter opened up the bottom groove for Eswein to attempt
the passing, however Weinfurter's momentum was enough to keep him in the lead. Check had
close in on the lead pair but continued to watch in third. Joe Krzykowski who
started deep in the field continued his forward momentum reaching the fourth spot on lap
12.
The battle for the lead would come to an unfortunate end when
Weinfurter and Eswein bumped coming off turn three resulting in Weinfurter spinning his
ride. As a result both drivers would be placed to the tail of the field, and Check
elevated to the lead for the restart of lap 15.
This left Check, Krzykowski, Bohmsach, Nelson and Chris Weinkauf in
the top five positions for the restart. Check blasted back into the lead which he
began to extend over the next 15 laps reaching a cushion of ten car lengths. Bohmsach
continued in third some distance back, while fourth was contested between Nelson, Weinkauf
and Frank Nitzke who was making a late charge.
Over the final ten laps of the race Krzykowski managed to close the
gap Check had built in the earlier portions of the race, but he was unable to mount any
serious challenge. Check would take the victory by three car lengths over
Krzykowski. Bohmsach drove a steady race to reach the line in third. Nitzke
was the man on the move over the final laps clawing his way into fourth and Nelson would
complete the top five after a spin by Weinkauf on the final lap of the event.
The Super Stock feature came to the green flag with Randy Storlie
immediately working past Roger Stanczyk for the lead. Stanczyk, seemingly off pace
quickly fell back in the field. Tim Zuehlke would rumble into second and for much of
the contest the battle between Storlie and Zuehlke would rage. A spin by Dan Braun
would slow the pace on lap four briefly before all out action resumed.
Again Zuehlke would apply the pressure to Storlie but Storlie held
fast to the lead position. Brian Schmutzer would secure the third spot making it a three
way battle for the lead by lap 10. Deeper in the field Galen Manternatch has been
slowly making forward progress reaching the fifth spot with a dozen laps in the books.
By the halfway point the top six cars were running nose to tail, with
Storlie leading the train. Manternatch opted to switch to the high groove and found
it working to hid advantage working into the fourth spot behind Storlie, Zuehlke and
Schmutzer.
Over the distance to the checkered Storlie managed to separate
himself a bit from the field and would accept the checkered flag by sixth car lengths over
Zuehlke. Manternatch, Brian Weinfurter and current point leader and defending
division champion Tim Plowman would comprise the top five finishers.
The 4 cylinder event would click off with just a single caution flag
to slow their pace. Jousha Opper would hold the point for the majority of the first
half of the contest while several of the faster qualifiers began to work toward the front
of the pack. Current point leader Dale Robinson was leading the charge with Rick
Brandl following. Robinson got slowed momentarily allowing Brandl to swap positions.
By lap eight the pair has worked into second and third behind Opper.
Opper would fall to Brandl's charge with only a pair of laps to go in
the contest. Robinson followed Brandl to the runner-up spot but with time running
out there was little time for him to contest the top spot. Brandl drove to the line
for the victory with a three car length cushion on Robinson. Opper drove a fine race
to finish third followed by Matt Hansen and Casey Koback.
Next week, Friday Night, June 31th, will be the special Union Night
program. One of the main features of this spectacular event is the large fireworks
display which will take place at the conclusion of the evening's racing activities.
The racing program itself will feature Super Late Models, Super Stocks and Pure Stocks
taking to the high banked third-mile paved oval. The Friday Night activities will
begin with time trails at 6:30 p.m. and the first race taking place at 7:45 p.m.
