Krzykowski Captures Second Straight in Super Lates,
Storlie Steals Victory in Super Stocks!!

racer Joe Krzykowski provided a bit of a nudge to race leader Jason Weinkauf in the
closing laps of the Super Late Model main event this evening to complete a charge from
deep in the field and score his second consecutive feature win of the 2005 season at
Golden Sands Speedway. In the Super Stock division Randy Storlie reclaimed the lead in the
final 50 feet to the finish and edged out a hard charging Collin Wilcott for the victory.
The 4 cylinder feature contest was sprinkled with a few cautions, but Dale Robinson
patiently worked his way to the front of the pack to score a convincing win...

Joe Krzykowski (#77) earned his second straight
Super Late Model victory at Golden Sands Speedway after a great charge through the field.
Super Late Model feature action saw veteran Joe
Krzykowski (#77) work past Jason Weinkauf (#76) in the closing laps of the contest.
Burton Brown (#07) and Steve Gress (#4) did battle for the lead in the opening laps
of the Super Late Model main event.
Rookie Gregg Ruffalo (#81) earned his first victory in Super Late Model action,
winning the semi-feature race.
Rene Scheinoha (#5) and Wayne Mackesy (#93) both
has the front ends of their Super Late Models damaged in an accident during the
Semi-feature contest.
Randy Storlie (#53) has been on a roll. He
made his way to victory lane after taking back the lead in the Super Stock feature in the
final turn.
Collin Wilcott (#16) worked past Randy Storlie (#53) for the lead in the Super
Stock feature, only to have Storlie retake the top spot in the final turn of the race.
Dale Robinson (#3D) was on top of the world, his car, the point standings and just
about everything else this evening after setting fast time and topping the 4 cylinder
feature race.
Sometimes even defending champions have trouble as seen here. Mike Oehmichen
goes for a spin while the field behind take evasive action.  
A trio of duos. The winners in 2-Man
Cruiser action this evening included, the teams of Green/Wheelock (#73); Dean/Dean (#71)
and veteran 2-Man cruiser racers Kampert/Kampert (#01). |
Steve Gress and Jason Weinkauf brought the field of 16 to the
green flag for the 40 lap Super Late Model main event.
As the field was unleashed on the high-banked third mile oval,
Weinkauf used the outside line to surge ahead of Gress for the initial lead, with Burton
Brown the 2001 track champion settling into the third slot. Brown, working the high line,
would manage to power past Gress for the second spot on lap six then setting after
Weinkauf. Troy Nelson, following in Brown's tire tracks also worked by Gress
reaching the third spot on the tenth circuit.
Weinkauf's pace would allow him to slowly increase his lead with each
passing lap, and that effort was further helped as Brown and Nelson began to contest the
second spot. Nelson would win out on that battle reaching the second spot on lap
fifteen.
Deeper in the field, Frank Nitzke and Joe Krzykowski, last weeks
feature winner, who had started the contest in the 13th position had been working their
way forward. Nitzke would scoot past Brown for third on lap 16 before closing the gap on
Nelson. Krzykowski meanwhile cracked the top five for the first time just before the
halfway point of the contest.
Weinkauf continued to maintain a six car length lead over Nelson who
was now receiving pressure from Nitzke. The side by side battle allowed Krzykowski
to catch up and join the battle for the second spot. Nitzke would surge ahead of
Nelson on lap 22 and Krzykowski would come with him for third on the same lap.
Weinkauf meanwhile continued to set a pace which kept his lead fairly
steady until a spin by rookie Gregg Ruffalo, who earlier won the semi-feature, bunched up
the field with 13 laps to go.
When racing resumed Weinkauf was pressured heavily by Nitzke, with
Krzykowski waiting for a way to advance, running third. Weinkauf held the low groove, with
Nitzke started to experiment with the high line. This allowed Krzykowski to work the
lower groove and when Nitzke was unable to make a bid for the lead, he instead lost the
runner-up spot to Krzykowski who would slip by for second with ten laps to go in the race.
Weinkauf so far had managed to fend off all prior challenges for the
lead but Krzykowski would prove to be more of a challenge. Driving hard into turn
three with five laps to go, Krzykowski and Weinkauf bumped, forcing Weinkauf to slide up
the track. This allowed Krzykowski to shoot to the bottom of the track and assume
the lead. Weinkauf was able to gather up his ride and regain momentum without losing
second, but Krzykowski quicky pulled away with the lead in hand.
On the way to the finish Krzykowski slowly pulled away from the field
scoring a comfortable victory. On the final lap Nitzke would work to the outside of
Weinkauf and by driving hard into the final turns was able to nose ahead by a matter of
inches at the finish line to steal second. Weinkauf would settle for third followed
by Nelson and Brown who completed the top five finishers.
Dan Braun and Randy Storlie brought the Super Stock feature to the
green flag, with veteran Storlie getting the jump on relative newcomer Braun. Only
one lap was completed before Dave Neitzke, Scott Hamel and Matt Raykowski tangled in turn
one.
Underway again Storlie shot back into the lead spot. Brad
Scholze and Chris Brooks would work into second and third during the opening laps.
Storlie, who had already visited victory lane several times this season was comfortable in
the lead spot with much of the action taking place in the pack behind him. Brooks
would take over the second spot on lap nine, and further back Collin Willcott was the
first of the cars starting near the back of the pack to begin their march forward reaching
fifth on lap ten.
Storlie meanwhile had his hands full with Brooks who kept attempting
to work into the lead using the high line. Brooks however was unable to muster the
speed and after several laps of side by side racing he fell back in line behind Storlie.
Another caution flew when Scholze spun coming off turn four at the
halfway point negating a strong showing. This left Storlie, Brooks and Wilcott in
the top three when the green flag flew once again.
Storlie again held the upper hand with Wilcott showing his speed
working past Brooks for second with twelve laps to go. Wilcott was proving his speed
moving forward to challenge Storlie who was hugging the low line. Wilcott began to
test the high line in effort to attempt to take the lead. Wilcott's experiment with
the high groove began to payoff as he managed to work to the high side of Storlie with
three laps to go. Slowly Wilcott began to pull even with Storlie and the pair were
dead even with a single lap remaining. Down the backstretch the final time Wilcott
would surge ahead into the final two turns, however coming off the final turn Wilcott
began to have the tail of his car began to slide breaking his momentum and allowing
Storlie to surge ahead. As a result Storlie reclaimed the lead in the final 50 feet
on the way to the finish to take the win in an exciting event. Wilcott would gather
up his ride to reach the line in second just a few feet ahead of a fast closing Brooks who
claimed third. Galen Manternatch drove a steady race to nab fourth and defending
division champion Tim Plowman, who was also the evening's fast qualifier, would complete
the top five runners.
The 4 cylinder feature would see Brandon Polansky pace much of the
contest though several caution flags before a late race run by Dale Robinson would see
Robinson take over the top spot with five laps to go. Once out front Robinson was
able to build a small gap on those giving chase. Behind him Polansky and Tom
Kralovetz were doing battle for second. As the white flag was flying the battle
would result in contact between the pair, as the slid up the track coming to a stop in
turn four. As a result of the final lap already being started Robinson would accept
the checkered under caution. Randy Polansky would inherit the second spot followed
by Casey Koback, Torey Nitzsche and Jenny Nitzsche in the top five.
With 30 entries in the 2-Man Cruisers the field was divided into
three main events. The team of Green and Wheelock would accept the checkered in the
first contest, while Dean and Dean came out on top of the second event. The final
race of the evening saw veteran's Kampert and Kampert secure yet another victory.
Next week, Friday Night, July 15th, will be the Mid-Season
Championship races presented by Charter Communications and Coca-Cola. The racing
program itself will feature extender main events for the Super Late Models and Super
Stocks, with 4 Cylinders and Pure Stocks also on the program. The Friday Night
activities on the high-banked third mile oval will begin with time trails at 6:30 p.m. and
the first race taking place at 7:45 p.m.
