Check Fends off Eswein for Super Late Checkered,
Plowman Remains Perfect in Super Stocks!

WI - A late race
caution setup a dash to the checkered at Golden Sands Speedway during the Super Late Model
main event, and the evening unfolded with solid racing action during the WAL-MART Kid's
Night program. Allen Check who had paced much of the 40 lap Super Late Model main
event found himself challenged by defending track champion Mark Eswein and Jason Weinkauf
as the green came out for a three lap dash to the finish. Check would manage to fend
off Eswein and sprint to the wire a half car length in the lead earning his first feature
win of the 2004 season. In the Super Stock division defending division champion Tim
Plowman made a late race charge to nab his second consecutive victory. In the Pure
Stock division it was current point leader Michael Gwidt capturing the victory. The
evening concluded with three 2-Man Cruiser contests which were claimed by the teams of
Kampert/Kampert, Floistad/Floistad and Wierzba/Wierzba.

Allen Check (#20) grabbed the victory this
evening in the Super Late Model division.
Allen Check (#20) spent the final three laps of
the Super Late Model feature fending off the challenges of defending division champion
Mark Eswein (#71) who would eventually settle for second.
Pat Williams (#27) did battle with Allen Check
(#20) and Jason Weinkauf (#76) for the lead early in the Super Late Model feature, enroute
to his first career top five finish.
Jason Kirsling (#99) scored his second straight
Super Late Model semi-feature win by holding off Monte Gress (#107.5).
Brady Baldry (#7) has had a solid start to his 2005 season, he captured the Super
Late Model fast heat this week.
For the second straight week, Mark Eswein topped the field with the fastest
qualifying lap in Super Late Model action.
Tim Plowman (#80) works past Brian Schmutzer (#55) on his was to his second
straight Super Stock feature win.
Brad Scholze (#78) has just worked under Brian Schmutzer for the lead of the Super
Stock feature when his engine expired dropping him from the contest.
Dave Neitzke (#06) garnered top honors this week in Super Stock qualifying.
Mike Gwidt (#25) set fast time last week, and
this week came away with a feature win in the Pure Stock division.
Brad Guralski (#16) turned in the fastest lap in Pure Stock qualifying.
 
The 2-Man Cruisers were on hand and feature win
were taken by the teams of Wierzba/Wierzba (#44), Floistad/Floistad (#F1) and Kampert/Kampert
(#01). |
Pat Williams and veteran Allen Check would bring the field to the green flag in
the 40 lap Super Late Model main event. Check working the high line would take the
advantage grabbing the top spot with Williams falling into position behind him in second.
Mark Van, and the Weinkauf brother Jason and Chris gave chase in the top five
spots. Williams attempted on several occasions during the next few laps to work
under Check for the top spot, but Check working a higher line would gain momentum down the
straights to continue to hold the lead.
Van began to lose several positions in the outside groove giving third to Jason
Weinkauf on lap five and fourth to Neil Knoblock on the following lap. Weinkauf
working the high line caught Williams on lap 11 and motored past to grab the second
position. Meanwhile the evenings fast qualifier Eswein, was working his way forward
reaching the top six after starting deep in the field.
Check continued to hold the front position with Jason Weinkauf now looking for a way to
the front spot. Check, running a slightly higher line continued to keep his rivals
at bay. Every few laps Weinkauf would peek to Check's inside but each time he would
attempt to position himself to challenge for the lead Check would manage to find enough
speed to fend off the challenge. A little further back Eswein was working the high
line with a good deal of success working past Keith Bohmsach and Knoblock for fourth by
lap 20. Eswein then set his sights on Williams and after a duel which lasted several
laps Eswein garnered the third position.
Eswein then reeled in Weinkauf who had fallen back slightly from check and the pair
began to contest the second position allowing Check to pull further away. Eswein
would grab the position with four laps to go in the contest, but Check had built a lead of
a dozen car lengths. The lead evaporated however on the next lap when Monte Gress
spun in turn two, forcing the only slowdown of the contest and brining Eswein up to
Check's rear bumper.
Over the final three laps Check was able to fend off several challenges for Eswein, who
in turn had to hold off Jason Weinkauf. The lead trio reached the stripe in that
order. Bohmsach grabbed the fourth position followed by Williams who garnered his
first career top five feature run. Knoblock, Jeff Weinfurter, Frank Nitzke, Chris
Weinkauf and opening night feature winner Troy Nelson made up the top ten finishers.
The Super Stock main event would have several interesting twists, especially late in
the 30 lap contest. The event began with David Pagels and Brian Schmutzer doing
battle wheel to wheel. Pagels driving a vintage Chevrolet Impala worked the inside
line but would surrender the lead to Schmutzer at the end of the second lap. Chris
Brooks and Brad Scholze gave chase in third and fourth.
On the seventh lap Galen Manternatch spun in turn three bringing out the first caution
of the contest, regrouping the field. The green returned with Schmutzer again taking
the lead and slowly extending his margin. Pagels slipped from the preferred line and
got shuffled back several positions on lap 12 allowing Brooks and Scholze to garner second
and third respectively.
On the next lap Scholze managed to work inside of Brooks taking the second spot.
By this time however Schmutzer had built up a 10 car length lead which Scholze would have
to erase.
Scholze appeared to have the speed to reach Schmutzer slicing the advantage with each
passing lap, finally reaching Schmutzer's rear bumper with 11 laps to go. On the
next lap Scholze managed to work to Schmutzer's inside and the pair ran wheel to wheel
down the backstretch. Scholze had just began to edge into the lead when his engine
expired in a puff of smoke ending the battle for the win and his evening. It also
resulted in the second and final caution of the contest.
This left Schmutzer in the top spot followed by Scott Hamel, Brooks, Collin Wilcott and
Plowman who had reached the top five. When the race began Hamel began to apply heavy
pressure on Schmutzer looking for a way to the lead. Further back Plowman
immediately went to the outside line and picked off Wilcott and Brooks in rapid fashion to
run third.
Schmutzer had the speed to fend off Hamel who dropped back to the inside. This
opened the outside line for Plowman to then set his sights on the second position taking
the spot with five laps remaining. While Schmutzer had been successful at turning
back all prior challenges Plowman would prove to be a bigger challenge. With three
laps to go Plowman worked by Schmutzer to take the lead and would pace the final circuits
for his second consecutive victory. Schmutzer would hold fast to second followed by
Hamel, Wilcott, Brooks and Dan Gollen in the top six.
Pure Stock feature action Dean Aschbacher paced the opening laps of the contest after a
early caution. Aschbacher would pace the contest until Christopher Rindfleisch
grabbed the lead position. Michael Gwidt who started near the tail of the field
patiently worked traffic reaching second place with nine laps to go in the contest.
Gwidt then closed on Rindfleisch but seemed unable to take the lead position. The
evening's fast qualifier Brad Guralski reached third spot with four laps to go but was
well behind the lead duo.
Gwidt managed to work to the inside of Rindfleisch with just three laps to go sneaking
ahead for the top spot. Rindfleisch still looked solid in second but he spun on the
following circuit giving the runner-up spot to Guralski. Gwidt comfortably paced the
distance to the finish followed by Guralski, Aschbacher, Dean Zakrezwski and Andrew Hintz
in the top five.
A field of nearly 30 cars were on hand for the evening's 2-Man Cruiser contests making
for a total of three feature races. The events were captured by Kampert/Kampert,
Floistad/Floistad and Wierzba/Wierzba.
Next week will be a special 10th Anniversary program making the 10th season the
Basseuner family has owned and operated Golden Sands Speedway. As a treat to the
fans a discounted admission of $30 per carload of spectators will be admitted to the
raceway. (Each person must have a seatbelt fastened to be counted in the carload).
It will also mark the first appearance of the Limited Late Models as the program
headliner. In addition the program will feature Super Stocks, Pure Stocks, 4
Cylinders and Spectator racing.
Friday evening shows begin with qualifying at 6:30 p.m., and racing at 7:45 p.m.
