Mike Brooks Masters Super Stock Main!

September 2, 2005;
Plover, WI - Race fans who enjoy good clean, hard, side by side racing for the lead,
did not leave Golden Sands Speedway disappointed after witnessing the Super Late Model
main event on Friday evening. Joe Krzykowski and Frank Nitzke, found
themselves locked in a duel for the win through a couple late race restarts, tossing the
lead back and forth over the final laps. In the end, Krzykowski emerged victorious
by a car length earning his fourth feature win of the 2005 season on the high banked third
mile oval. For the second straight week Nitzke would finish in the second spot, but
once again he would thrill the fans with his mastery of the tricky outside groove at the
raceway.

Joe Krzykowski (#77) scored his fourth Super
Late Model feature win of the 2005 season after a torrid battle with Frank Nitzke.
Frank Nitzke (#18) and Joe Krzykowski (#77)
thrilled the fans with a battle for the lead which changed hands several times during the
Super Late Model main event.

Scott Beyer (#3) captured the Super Late Model
semi-feature contest.
Current point leader and defending champion Mark Eswein (#71) turned in the fastest
qualifying effort in the Super Late Models this evening.

One of the hardest crashes in some time involved the cars of Joel Schulz and John
Totzke Jr. (#8) during a Super Late Model heat race. Schulz was okay, while Totzke
was shaken but otherwise unhurt. The same could not be said of their cars which
suffered extensive damage.

Mike Brooks (#25) topped the Super Stock main event.

Mike Brooks (#25) uses the high line to pass Dan
Gollen (#3), while giving chase to Galen Manternatch (#5) during the Super Stock feature
race.

Defending 4 cylinder champion Mike Oehmichen (#87) collected the feature win this
evening.

Mike Oehmichen (#87) works by Randy Polansky
(#7) for the lead during the 4 cylinder feature race.

This weeks 2-Man Cruiser winners included the teams of Baer/Schlapman (#16);
Bohm/Lepak (#2) and Boyer/Poinek (#68). |
In Super Stock action Mike Brooks would pass Galen
Manternatch for the lead in their feature race near the mid point of the contest, and
spent the balance of the event keeping Manternatch in his tire track to earn his first
trip to victory lane after a feature this season. The 4 cylinder class saw defending
division champion Mike Oehmichen outrun Torey Nitzsche. In doing so he pulled within
10 points of division point leader Dale Robinson who finished third in the evening's
contest. Next week will decide the title for the class. Completing the evening
were three thrilling 2-Man Cruiser contests with checkered flags falling to the teams of
Baer/Schlapman, Bohm/Lepak and Clark and Boyer
The Super Late Model event would see Joe Krzykowski and Frank
Nitzke hold down the top two spots the entire distance of the 40 lap feature, but their
battle throughout the contest would keep fans on their feet as the advantage swapped back
and forth.
When the green flag fell it was Nitzke using the high line to
take the opening lead, nosing ahead of Krzykowski as the pair raced around the high banked
oval. The battle for third waged in a similar format as Troy Nelson and Blake
Horstman contested the third spot. Nitzke's outside line allowed him to lead the
first six laps before Krzykowski edged ahead on lap seven.
A spin by Scott Beyer on lap eight would break up the pack style
formation as the restart would be single file. Krzykowski would hold the point with
Nitzke, Nelson, Horstman and Chris Weinkauf in tow.
Underway again Krzykowski hugged the low groove while Nitzke went
back to the high line. Nelson was also working a higher groove back in the third
spot while trying to fend off the challenges of Horstman. Action again slowed
briefly when Monte Gress spun on lap 18.
With the race restarting Nitzke went right back to the outside
line and this time it proved fruitful as he roared past Krzykowski for the top spot on lap
21. A similar move by Horstman in effort to pass Nelson for third did not prove as
successful as he wound up losing a couple positions as Weinkauf moved into the fourth
spot.
Nitzke would stretch out to a two car length lead with 15 laps to
go in the contest, and that would prove to be the biggest advantage of the race.
Krzykowski however was far from done as race race rolled along he slowly began to reel in
Nitzke.
Krzykowski again would find a way under Nitzke as the reached the
line with ten laps to go. The pair ran wheel to wheel the next several laps, with
Krzykowski slowly inching forward. The pair were dead event with eight laps to go,
and on the next lap Krzykowski would lead the contest by a couple feet.
With six laps to go a spin by Mark Van slowed the pace one final
time. This time when the green flag returned Krzykowski would have the speed to keep
Nitzke at bay as Nitzke was unable to get to the outside. Krzykowski would reach the
stripe with a car length advantage for the win. Nitzke would settle for second.
Weinkauf would win out on his duel with Nelson to earn third. Nelson settled for
fourth and Brandon Selle would complete the top five finishers.
Super Stock feature racing got underway with Dan Gollen returning
to action, setting the pace from the pole position. Gollen had his car severely
damaged in an accident early in the season and made his return to the track this evening.
Galen Manternatch would start the event to his outside. Gollen would get the jump to
pace the opening laps with Manternatch working the outside line. On lap three
Manternatch would fall in line behind Gollen briefly while Tim Zuehlke, Sam Anderson and
Mike Brooks gave chase in the top five spots.
A slip by Anderson on lap five would drop him from the top five
and allowed Brooks to take the fourth spot as Brooks began to look at the outside line as
a way to move forward. Brooks would succeed in securing the third spot with a pass on
Zuehlke on lap eight.
Meanwhile the battle for the lead resumed with Manternatch
finding room to work under Gollen. Manternatch would reach the stripe with the lead
as lap ten began.
A spin by Brian Schmutzer in turn two on lap 14 allowed Brooks to
catch up with the lead duo of Manternatch and Gollen. When the green flag returned
Manternatch went back to setting the pace. Brooks went right to work on Gollen and
jumped into the second spot. For the next several circuits Brooks would stalk
Manternatch looking for a way to the front.
With ten laps to go the pair brushed briefly with allowed Brooks
to dart to the inside of Manternatch as they raced down the backstretch. Brooks
momentum would carry him to the lead, and once out front Brooks was able to build a small
cushion. Manternatch continued to give chase in second as the laps began to wind
down.
Further back Collin Wilcott and Tim Plowman has worked by Gollen
to reach third and fourth.
For the balance of the race Brooks was able to maintain a two car
length advantage on Manternatch and would take the victory. Manternatch held onto
second followed by Wilcott, Plowman and Gollen.
The 4 cylinder contest would see Amanda Schara, Jenny Nitzke and
Randy Polansky all take their turn pacing the early portions of the 4 cylinder feature
before the first caution flew on lap three when point leader Dale Robinson was hit and
spun by Lance Neuman who was sent to the pit area after the contact.
The race resumed with Polansky setting the pace briefly before
Oehmichen made his way to the top spot on lap six. Once out front Oehmichen would
pace the balance of the race. Torey Nitzsche climbed into the second spot with five
laps to go and would close on Oehmichen but would never seriously threaten the leader.
At the checkered it was Oehmichen for the win. Torey Nitzsche
would claim second. Robinson would charge through the field reaching third by the
finish to maintain his point lead. Polansky finished fourth with Casey Koback completing
the top five spots.
Next week, Friday Night, September 9th is Season Championship Night.
The program will feature racing in the Super Late Models, Super Stocks, Pure Stocks
and 4 Cylinders. The program will bring to a close the 2005 season point chases in
each of those divisions.
However the 2-Man Cruiser title will be decided at the final event of the 2005 season, which will be the popular Eve of
Devastation. That event will be held on Friday Night September 16th and features a wide
variety of novelty races and motorized mayhem.
