2005 Eve of
Devastation!
By Amy Kolo |
September
16, 2005;
Plover, WI - A record number of people showed up for the last event
of the season. The Eve of Devastation proves to be one of Golden Sands
Speedway’s most attended nights! From bus races, trailer races, Wild
Willy and the Wild Bunch stunts, to the burning of Father Grubba’s
beloved old truck it is a night of family fun and smashin’ and crashin’
entertainment.

The Cruiser Championships are always held
on the last night of the season. The points race was pretty tight all
year long. This is also one of the nights that the Cruisers actually get
to time in. The #68 of Boyer and Poinek held the fast time, with #08
Kuhn and Van Stedum in second and #01 of Kampert and Kampert taking
third in time out of thirty-three cars!
A consi, semi-feature and feature event was held for the Cruiser class,
with two transferring from the consi and semi. The #17 of Kawleski and
Clark took the win in the consi with #66 Laszinskji and Aldrich in
second. The semi feature held a field of twelve cars with the #42
Wellens and Bauer taking first and #50 McDonald and McDonald in second.
The feature race was a highly contest race with only a few caution
flags.
#2 Bohm and Lepak took first, quite a feat after being totally
demolished a few weeks before! #01 Kampert and Kampert finished second,
and #8 Kuhn and Van Stedum took third.
Spectator race winners were: First Place – Mike Sellner, second place –
Kevin Blanchard and third place – Chad Orlowski.
Forwards/backwards races were action packed! The race consists of two
laps forward, then two laps backward! They ran three heats and a final.
Bob Kierstyn took the final win. Congratulations
Plywood races took some strong hands and some talent! The race consists
of making a lap around the track (racing your opponents) while holding a
4’ x 8’ piece of plywood to the roof of your car. If you drop the
plywood, you must stop and pick it up before you continue. Three heats
and a final took place with Paul Nyhuis taking the win. Congratulations.
Paul Stender showed up with his popular jet burners! He had a jet burner
port-a-potty which the kids just roared for. He also had an awesome jet
burning four wheeler and a huge truck! With the jet burning truck he set
fire to Father Grubba’s beloved 1983 Ford Ranger. Father Grubba’s ford
ranger just turned 500,000 miles! And was cremated by Paul Stender! It
was pretty spectacular how fast the jet burner ate up the little truck.
Wild Willy and the Wild Bunch, a bunch of local daredevils, put on
another spectacular trailer house jumping stunt. But this year they
added quite a few buses before the trailer house. Wild Willy made the
jump with ease! He makes it look so easy! Could he possibly be the next
Evil Knievel?
The Dupes of Hazzard jump was won by Willy Higgins, but he barely beat
out Rodney Feltz, another area daredevil.
Scrubby Sullivan won the roll over contest for the second year in a row!
The Bus races, always a crowd favorite were pretty cool. Roll overs,
near misses and plenty of action! Fast Lane Johnny from Badger Iron took
the win. Seems like his bus is getting faster and faster. The rest of
the guys are going to have to start beefing up their own buses!
The trailer races, what much more can you say but AWESOME! Sometimes
there is so much action going on that you do not even know what part of
the track to watch. Campers, boats, lawnmowers, dummies, you name it
were flying all over! It came down to two at the very end. Brian Stroik
Jr. and TJ Lasinksi. Brian had a bicycle on the back of his trailer that
never even flew off! TJ’s dummy pretty much was taken out on lap one. It
was a game of cat and mouse. At the end TJ outsmarted Brian and flipped
him on his side for the win. It was action packed! Thanks TJ and Brian
for a great show!
