Chris Weinkauf Captures
Third Super Late Victory!
Plowman's Last Lap Pass Nets Super Stock Checkered!

With one month of weekly Friday Night racing left on the 2006 season
schedule it's the time of year where drivers make their late season push
for the championship. In the Super Late Model division, it was
Chris Weinkauf of Merrill, who managed to fend off race long challenges
from Mark Van to earn his third feature win of the 2006 season.
While Weinkauf lead most of the contest, Van stayed within striking
distance to the checkered flag.

Chris
Weinkauf (#75) nailed down his third Super Late Model feature win of
the season at Golden Sands Speedway.
A late
race caution in the Super Late Model main event put Mark Van (#66)
on Chris Weinkauf's (#75) rear bumper for the sprint to the
checkered flag.
Mark Van (#66) had one of the best runs of his racing career at
Golden Sands Speedway as he was able to fend off Tim Hintz (#1) and
Kenny Richards (#9) for runner-up honors in the Super Late Model
feature.
Jeff Weinfurter (#3) collected the checkreed flag in
the Super Late Model smei-feature contest.
Mack Mackesy (#12), Gregg Ruffalo (#81) and Steve
Gress (#4) had an unfortunate meeting during the Super Late Model
semi-feature event.
Current Super Late Model point leader Kenny Richards (#9) set fast
qualifying honors again this evening.
Tim Plowman (#80) earned his first Super Stock
feature victory of the 2006 season.
On the move! Tim Plowman (#80) works the high
line (#80) pas Wes Coon (#51) and Brian Schmutzer (#55) during the
final laps of the Super Stock feature.
Brian Back (#71) was the evening's fast qualifier in the Super Stock
division.
Current Pure Stock division point leader Dean Zakrezwski (#19)
topped the main event this evening.
Eric Kawlewski (#17) has his hands full as Dean Zakrezwski (#19) and
Michael Gwidt (#25) charge toward the front of the pack during the
Pure Stock feature race.
Michael Gwidt (#25) turned in fast qualifying honors in the Pure
Stock division.
A popular night for the kids! Race car rides were available to
children this evening. Here one youngest gets a ride from
Super Late Model competitor Pat Williams.
The 2-Man Cruisers were back in action with three
feature contests. The races were won by the teams of
Bohm/Gladowski (#2); Gagas/Perzinski (#22) and Wierzba/Wierzba
(#44). |
The Super Stock feature
contest would see defending champion Tim
Plowman opt for the outside line with
five laps to go in their featured race.
The move would prove to be the correct
one as he rocketed into the lead on the
final lap, making a last turn pass of
race leader Brian Schmutzer to steal the
victory. In the Pure Stock
division, another late race charge would
be witnessed as current division point
leader Dean Zakrezwski made his way to
the winner's circle after taking over
the top spot in the final laps.
The 40 lap Super Late
Model contest would see Chris Weinkauf
and Mark Van square off with the drop of
the green flag. Weinkauf would get
the upper had as the field came up to
speed. Van stayed tight to
Weinkauf's rear bumper with Jason
Weinkauf, Tim Hintz and fast qualifier
Kenny Richards holding down the top five
spots with ten laps in the books.
Hintz, opting for the
high line began to have some success in
moving forward, diving under Jason
Weinkauf and taking the third spot on
lap 14. Hintz then choose to go to
the outside line as he reeled in Van.
Hintz was proving successful, slowing
moving up alongside Van and nearly had
taken the second spot when the caution
appeared when Eugene Gregorich Jr., spun
off the track in turn two.
The yellow flag has
wiped out Chris Weinkauf's advantage and
when the green flag flew he had to
rebuild his lead. Hintz would
aging attempt to use the high groove to
take second from Van, however this time,
Richards would instead use the low ling
to steal the third spot from Hintz on
lap 25.
The final slowdown of
the contest would appear on lap 31 when
Joe Krzykowski and Pat Williams locked
horns coming off turn two. With
the green flag returning for the sprint
to the finish, Chris Weinkauf would have
his hands full with Van, who managed to
work to his inside. However Chris
Weinkauf was able to build his momentum
and over the final laps pulled away to a
three car length lead to take the
victory. Van would settle for
second in his strongest performance of
the year. Richards, with his third
place run would take back over the point
lead by 12 markers over Mark Eswein.
Hintz and Jason Weinkauf would complete
the top five finishers.
The Super Stocks came to
the high banked third-mile oval 16
strong for their featured event.
Adam Krzykowski would start on the pole
of the contest with veteran Randy
Storlie to his outside. Krzykowski
would get the upper hand at the drop of
the green flag while Storlie would have
his hands full with Roger Stanczyk who
came up to challenge for the runner-up
spot.
As the drivers hustled
their machines around the raceway
Krzykowski began to slowly build and
advantage on the field. Stanczyk
would successfully make the pass for
second bringing Brian Schmutzer with him
to third by lap five.
On lap seven Stanczyk
lost control heading into turn three and
slid through the infield. He
managed to get his car headed the right
direction after a wild slide, but by the
time he gathered up his machine he had
fallen deep into the field. This
gave second to Schmutzer as the race
continued without a caution.
Schmutzer would make a
break to the inside of Krzykowski of the
top spot with an inside move on lap ten
to take over the lead. Krzykowski's
night would get worse as the battle
between he and Storlie for second would
result in Krzykowski going for a spin on
lap 17. Both drivers would go to
the tail of the field for the restart.
This left Schmutzer in
the lead followed by Wes Coon, Josh
Oleson, Dave Neitzke and Tim Plowman in
the top five spots as the race resumed.
Underway again, Schmutzer had the speed
to keep Coon in his tire tracks, while
Olseon followed patiently in third.
The top five ran single file as the laps
wound down until Plowman opted to try
the high line with six laps to go.
The decision would be fruitful.
Plowman quickly surpassed Neitzke and
Olseon to place himself in third with
four laps to go in the contest.
His momentum allowed him to move
alongside Coon one laps later and the
paid ran wheel to wheel for the next lap
before Plowman again got the advantage.
With Schmutzer hugging
the low line and Plowman racing the high
groove the showdown for the win began at
the white flag as Plowman rolled in
alongside Schmutzer as the pair headed
down the backstretch on the final lap.
The two were dead event in the final
turns, but the momentum of the high line
allowed Plowman to sprint to the
checkered with a margin of less than a
foot to steal the win. Schmutzer
would finish second after a solid
performance. Coon, Oleson and
Brian Back made up the top five
finishers.
In the Pure Stock
feature race Mike Kasperek would take
the lead from his pole position starting
spot, fending off the challenges of
numerous drivers until late in the race
when current point leader Dean
Zakrezwski and fast qualifier Michael
Gwidt closed in on his rear bumper.
With five laps to go it appeared
Kasperek would have the momentum to
reach the finish line first, protecting
the low lane. Heading for the
white flag however Zakrezwski muscled to
his inside taking the lead as the
entered turn one on the final lap.
Zakrezwski would pace the final circuit
to steal the win with Kasperek taking
second. Gwidt would lay claim to
third with Erik Kawlewski and Dean
Aschbacher completing the top five
runners.
Next week will be a
special program featuring the
Mid-American Stock car series which will
be making it's first showing at the
track in several seasons. In
addition Super Late Models, Super
Stocks, and Spectator drags are on the
card.
