Super Late Model Driver Pat Williams Wins
1st Career Feature,
Brooks Finds 4th Super Stock First Just Fine!
By Mike Barrett |
August
25, 2006;
Plover, WI -
Pat Williams of New London qualifies most weeks into the fastest 14 at
Golden Sands Speedway, and in his third year had never taken the
checkered flag 1st until tonight. Williams' front row outside start
looked like difficult work was ahead with 4 time 2006 feature winner
Jason Weinkauf next to Williams on the pole. The last few years Pat not
only showed a steady curve of improvement in qualifying and finishing,
he showed patience past his years tonight, using the first six laps to
ease his way in front of the always hard-charging Weinkauf to lead until
the checkered flag flew.

Pat
Williams (#27) scored his first career Super Late Model feature
victory at Golden Sands Speedway after taking the lead from Jason
Weinkauf early in the contest.
Pat
Williams (#27) motored past Jason Weinkauf (#76) for the lead in the
Super Late Model feature event and then held onto the top spot to
the checkered.

Jeremy Switlick (#40) made his first trip to victory lane this
season taking top honors in the Super Late Model semi-feature.
Kenny Richards (#9) displays his collection of fast qualifying
stickers on his window, the have been earned throughout the season
in Super Late Model compeition.

Mike Brooks (#25) captured the Super Stock main event this evening.
Mike Brooks (#25) fends off the challenges of Brian
Weinfurter (#24) and Tim Plowman (#80) during the closing laps of
the Super Stock main event.
Dave Neitzke (#06) didn't have the evening he had
planned getting collected in an accident in a Super Stock heat race.
He was able to make repairs and return for the feature.
14 year old Colin Reffner (#87) earned his first
career featurevictory in the 4 cylinder class.
Dallas Kralovetz (#21) turned in another fast qualifying effort in
the 4 Cylinder division. The 15 year old driver will be the 2006
division champion once the season concludes as no one can catch him
in the season standings.

Two man Cruiser main events were taken this evening
by the teams of Turzinski/Turzinski (#14); Dean/Dean (#71) and
Green/Feltz (#73). |
It looked easier for
Brian Back's Super Stock effort as he
seemed to have a runaway win going until
an apparent oil leak caused a
consultation for the #71 driver; that
handed the lead to Mike Brooks who
picked up his fourth feature of 2006.
The 4 Cylinder racers returned to the
1/3 mile, and Colin Reffner finished the night as
perhaps the youngest ever feature race winner at this (or possibly any
other Wisconsin) short track! The 2 man Cruisers capped the humid night
with 3 events; Turzinski & Turzinski Erasing the 1st field, Dean and
Dean in a late race pass for the win, and Green and Wheelock triumph in
an exciting close battle for the final race.
The 40 Lap Super Late
Model feature began on a green (clean)
race track after afternoon drizzles made
for a humid night and a slippery
surface. Jason Weinkauf and Pat Williams
lined up and immediately raised the
excitement level, with both drivers
trying to find the grip to edge past the
other. Six hard fought laps in; Williams
barely cleared the younger Weinkauf
brother and used his front position to
extend his lead. Behind him battled
Blake Horstman and Jason Weinkauf, with
Horstman looking to the inside lap after
lap, never completely able to pull off
the pass on Jason. Late race action was
furious mid-pack, both Mark Eswein and
Burton Brown showing considerable skill
saving race cars that looked inches away
from crashing, as Brandon Selle and
Kenny Richards thrilled fans with steady
passing until the pair finished 3rd and
5th. Jason Weinkauf settled into second
while Blake Horstman reluctantly
finished 4th.
The Super Stock Feature
of 25 laps appeared to be a runaway for
Brian Back, who bolted past Dale
Schultz, Adam Krzykowski and Mike Brooks
to a dozen car-length lead until smoke
appeared, which increased enough to
warrant black-flagging the always-fast
Back, leaving the lead to Mike Brooks. A
late-race caution lined up Brooks, Brian
Weinfurter, Wes Coon, Josh Oleson,
Krzykowski, and Tim Plowman in 6th for a
restart. When it was over Plowman had
motored his way to 3rd in a 3 lap rush
in the outside lane! Brooks celebrated
his 4th feature of the year, Weinfurter
in 2nd, Plowman 3rd, Coon 4th, and Josh
Oleson 5th.
It seemed a while since
the 4 Cylinder class had raced, but not
much has changed, Dallas Kralovetz again
posted a top qualifying time and the
field of 16 rolled to a green flag start
well before the 10 O'clock hour for the
final feature. Dave Sullllivan's pole
position evaporated with handling
difficulties, and Brandon Polansky led
early, with James Moser, Clem Haring,
Josh Opper, Scott Sholze all giving
chase. It was soon obvious the Colin
Reffner and Mike Oehmichen, both driving
coincidentally # 87 cars, were on their
way to the front. With only about 5 laps
remaining, Reffner takes the lead,
slower lapped traffic helping delay
Polansky enough to allow Reffner to
catch the leader. Colin kept the revs up
and finished ahead of a pack of racers
using every line around the track,
Kralovetz 2nd, Brandon Polansky 3rd,
Josh Opper a hard-fought 4th, and Clem
Haring's bright orange machine 5th.
Reffner started the season as a 12 year
old, and looks to be around the winner's
circle for a while!
Only two more points
races remain with a big Labor Day
weekend of racing in store. Racing
Friday night AND Monday afternoon will
give fans the Season Championship action
Golden Sands Speedway is famous for.
Gates open at 4:30 pm, time trials at
6:30 pm and racing starting at 7:45 pm
