Chris Weinkauf Super Late Model Win,
Manternach Avoids Melee to Capture Super Stock Checkered!

April

Plover, WI -
Week two of the 2006 racing season at Central Wisconsin's Power
Playground, Golden Sands Speedway. For Merrill, Wisconsin racer Chris
Weinkauf, a late race caution provided the means to power past Burton
Brown and capture the headline event in the Super Late Model division.
In the Super Stock class Galen Manternach avoided a tangle between the
lead cars and found himself in control of the pace of the Super Stock
feature until the checkered flag fell. In the Pure Stock division, Gary
Haarklau rebounded from a bad flip one week ago, to reach the finish
line first after a torrid battle in the Pure Stock main event. In
the 4 cylinder class, Dallas Kralovetz was the surprise winner of the
main event after a post race inspection revamped the finishing order.

Chris
Weinkauf took advantage of a late race restart to grab the lead from
Burton Brown and capture his first Super Late Model feature win of
the 2006 season at Golden Sands Speedway.
Burton
Brown (#07) had his hands full trying to fend off the challenges of
both Mark Eswein (#71) and Blake Horstman (#75).

Mark
Mackesy (#12) ran extremely well contending for the lead until an
engine failure left Burton Brown (#07) with the top spot in the
closing stages of the Super Late Model feature race.
Frank Nitzke (#18) topped the Super Late Model
semi-feature contest.
Jeff Kendall (#00) topped the Super Late Models in
qualifying this evening.
Galen Manternach (5) was victorious in the Super
Stock main event.
Galen Manternach (#5) managed to fend off a late race
charge by Randy Storlie (#53) for the victory in the Super Stock
feature.

Gary
Haarklau (#99) returned to action just one week after flipping his
race car out of the raceway and scored a feature win in the Pure
Stock division.
One the final lap of the Pure Stock feature, Gary Haarklau (#99)
fends off Andrew Hintz (#7) to take the checkered flag.

The evening's fast qualifiers in formation included
Super Late Models Jeff Kendall (#00), Super Stocks (#80) Tim
Plowman, and new track record holder Dallas Kralovetz (#21) in the 4
cylinder class. |
The 18 car starting grid rolled to the line accept the green
flag as the 40 lap Super Late Model main event roared to life.
Polesitter Joe Krzykowski and Mark Mackesy dueled for the lead position
as Burton Brown and Tim Hintz contested the third spot during the
opening rounds of the contest. Krzykowski would slowly work ahead
of Mackesy to secure the lead, with Brown filtering into the third slot.
The lead trio then began to open a small advantage on the field.
On lap 12 a chain reaction bumping incident eventually resulted in
Monte Gress spinning in turn four and producing the first caution of the
contest. The yellow flag erased the five car length lead
Krzykowski had built and placed Mackesy, Brown Blake Horstman and
multi-time track champion Mark Eswein. Chris Weinkauf meanwhile
had begun to make progress in the field having moved up to the tenth
spot after starting near the tail of the field.
Mackesy would find room under Krzykowski to challenge for the top
spot, and the duo clicked off several laps of side by side racing for
the lead. Mackesy would secure the position on lap 17, leaving
Krzykowski to battle with Brown for the runner-up position. Brown
hugging the low line would inch into second as the race reached the
halfway point.
Brown the 2001 track champion would nose under Mackesy on lap 23 and
proceed to work by into the lead. Eswein meanwhile scrambled into
the third position while trying to fend off the challenges of Horstman.
With 13 laps to go Mackey's fine run would come to a halt as his
engine expired in turn two forcing him to spin of the top of the track
and collecting Krzykowski in the process. The resulting caution
regrouped the field with Brown, Eswein, Jason Weinkauf, Horstman and
Chris Weinkauf holding down the top five.
Jason Weinkauf would slid up the track on the restart losing several
spots while, Brown and Eswein began to contest the lead position.
Brown would surge ahead leaving Eswein and Horstman to duel for second.
The battle for the runner-up spot became heated as the pair exchanged
paint on several occasions before Eswein went spinning in turn four,
forcing the third and final caution of the contest. Both drivers
were able to continue from the tail of the field.
The setup a seven lap sprint to the finish with Brown, Chris
Weinkauf, Kenny Richards, Jeff Kendall and Jason Weinkauf in the top
five positions. When the green flag flew Chris Weinkauf
immediately jumped to the outside of Brown. After a brief battle he
would surge ahead becoming the new leader of the contest. A wiggle
on the next lap by Chris Weinkauf allowed Brown a second shot at the
lead as the race neared the conclusion, but Chris Weinkauf was able to
regain his momentum and roar ahead for the final time taking the win by
three car lengths. Over the final laps Brown and Richards engaged
in a wheel to wheel battle for the runner-up spot, with Richards using
the high line to earn the position by a matter of inches. Brown
would settle for third followed closely by Kendall and Jason Weinkauf in
the top five spots. After the first two weeks, Richards, who is in
his first full season of competing at Golden Sands, sits atop the point
standings followed closely by Kendall.
Denny Crass would set the pace in the Super Stock feature contest
trough a couple of quick cautions early on. Galen Manternach and
Collin Wilcott would provide Crass with several challenges for the top
spot but he hung tenaciously to the lead position. The battle for the
lead became a tussle as the cars of Wilcott and Crass became tangled on
lap ten. Manternach was able to spin to avoid the melee coming to
a rest in turn three.
Manternach retained his position in the lead followed by Randy
Storlie, Rodger Stanczyk, Brian Back and Bo Bennish who was making his
first appearance of the year. Storlie would make and attempt to take the
lead using the high line with eight laps to go, but instead would wind
up giving the second spot to Stanczyk.
Bennish would prove to be the man on the move over the final laps
working into second with two laps to go in the contest. Bennish
then attempted to work the high groove in effort to pass Manternach as
the white flag unfurled. A final corner bid for the win would see
Bennish spin and slide acrossed the finish line. Manternach had
already secured the victory while Bennis rolling backwards was edged out
by Stanczyk for second. Bennish slid to s top in third as the
field scatted to avoid his car which sat sideways at the finish line.
Brian Back crossed the line fourth followed by Storlie and Brian
Weinfurter. Fortunately Bennish was not hit directly by any cars.
A post race inspection would drop Bennish from the results leaving
the top five officially as Manternatch, Stanczyk, Back, Storlie and
Weinfurter.
The Pure Stock feature contest would boil down to an exciting battle
between Gary Haarklau, Dean Zackrezwski, Andrew Hintz and Troy Engman as
the quartet or racers battled pack style over the final five laps with
Haarklau holding tenaciously to the lead. The remarkable thing
about the battle was not the close racing, but rather Haarklau's return
from a violent wreck the week before in qualifying where he had a
throttle stick and he flipped out of the raceway knocking down
billboards in the process. The leaders swapped positions several
times with Zackrezwski, Hintz and Engman all having their shot at
Haarklau for the lead.
When the checkered fell it was Haarklau reaching the stripe first for
a popular win. Hintz would nose out Zackrezwski for second,
followed by Engman and Jeff Burrows.
The final event of the evening would prove to be an exciting contest
as the 4 cylinders would battle three wide on occasion. The last
lap of the event saw multiple spins and tangles with J.J. Flick racing
under the checkered first followed by Dallas Kralovetz who has avoided
several accidents in front of him. The final results in this
contest were further resorted after the event as several cars did not
meet the specifics of the rulebook including the winning machine of
Flick.
The tip five were officially posted as Kralovetz, Jeff Cormack,
Brandon Polansky, Mike Oehmichen and Kevin Teske.
