Weinfurter Takes New
Colors to Victory Lane in Super Lates,
Stanczyk Smokes 'Em in Super Stocks!

June 2,
2006;
Plover, WI -
Jeff Weinfurter would be the first to tell you, his 2006 racing season
has not gone as planned so far. But perhaps a new look was a small
part of the key to success and a turnaround of fortunes as the Wisconsin
Rapids veteran has a change of luck as well as car color. The
result, on an ideal night for racing he put his freshly painted white
machine out front of the Super Late Model feature and kept it there in
the non-stop 40 lap Super Late Model feature. The end result was
his first feature win of the young season. In the Super Stock
class it was Roger Stanczyk whose car began to smoke with two laps to
go, who would nurse his ride to the finish line first to capture the
win. In pure stock action, 60 year old Dennis Stilson, who began
racing just last year, made a visit to Golden Sands Speedway and won his
first career feature win. Finally in 4 cylinder action 14 year old
Dallas Kralovetz, showed remarkable patience working his way through
traffic to take the lead in the closing laps and making a sweep of the
evening's race program.
Mark Mackesy and Jeff Weinfurter would bring the field to the
green flag for what would be a non-stop 40 lap Super Late Model feature
contest. Blake Horstman and Chris Weinkauf would comprise the
second row as the field came up to speed.
Weinfurter would get the jump to take the initial lead, while Mackesy
filtered into the runner-up spot following closely behind.
Weinkauf immediately moved to the outside line in effort to wrestle
second from Mackesy.
The battle for second between Mackesy and Weinkauf allowed Weinfurter
to slowly pull away from the field. On lap 12 Weinkauf got a good
run off turn two and managed to steal the runner-up spot from Mackesy.
The goal now was to attempt to close on Weinfurter who had built up a
eight car length lead.
By the halfway point in the contest both Weinfurter and Weinkauf had
build a small margin over the balance of the field. Horstman was
third, Kurt Guralski and Mackesy held down the top five spots at the
halfway point with a hard charging Brandon Selle reaching sixth after
starting deep in the field. Two laps later Selle would break the
top five at Mackesy's expense.
The race continued to click off at a rapid pace, with Weinfurter
still maintaining a four car length cushion with 10 laps to go in the
contest. Weinkauf would close slightly during the final rounds but was
never able to get within striking distance as Weinfurter powered past
the finish line for the win with a three car length advantage.
Weinkauf would settle for second.
Horstman would spend the final laps fending off the challenges of
Guralski and reach the checkered in third. However a post race
inspection would negate the performance giving the third spot to
Guralski. Selle would be awarded fourth and Jason Weinkauf, the
evening's fast qualifier completed the top five finishers. Current
point leader Kenny Richards who won the past two events at Golden Sands
Speedway would finish in sixth.
The Super Stock contest would prove to be a wild one, with only a
single lap in the books before the first of several slowdowns, this one
being for a multi-car spin. When action resumed David Pagels set
the pace with Bert Soyka and Roger Stanczyk in tow.
Stanczyk would work the high line around the banked third-mile
oval and the groove proved to be to his liking as he worked past Soyka
and then Pagels to take the lead on lap 12.
Pagels fortunes turned sour on the next lap as his car began to
lose power falling back in the field. At the same time Soyka and
Scott Hamel collided forcing the second yellow of the contest.
Stanczyk, Dave Neitzke, Dan Braun, Brian Weinfurter and Randy Storlie
found themselves in the top five with the revamped running order as the
green flag flew again. For Stanczyk it was simply a matter of
charging back to the lead. Storlie would prove to be the man on
the move as racing continued as he worked by both Braun and Weinfurter
to reach third with a dozen laps to go.
The final yellow flag of the contest played out on the front stretch
as Bo Bennish and Brian Back made contact. Bennish would spin wildly and
clip Back as he passed resulting in heavy damage to the front of his
car. Several other drivers narrowly missed Bennish's machine which
sat sideways at in the racing groove on the front stretch.
After a brief cleanup the final three laps of the contest would play
out with Stanczyk setting the pace. Neitzke would hold down the second
spot with Storlie following in third. Stanczyk would click off the
final laps with his car smoking a bit more with each passing lap, but
seemingly unhindered by the problem as his pace was enough to allow him
to reach the finish line first for the win. Neitzke had initially
opted for the high line to get a run on Stanczyk but the maneuver didn't
work allowing Storlie to slip by for second before the checkered.
Fast qualifier Tim Plowman would also sneak by Neitzke by a matter of
inches at the wire for third. Neitzke would hang on for fourth and
Brian Weinfurter comprised the top five.
In Pure Stock action some three and four wide racing was the
highlight of the opening laps as the field tried to sort itself out.
Matt Ciesielski would pace the first few circuits before Todd Kuehl took
over the lead on lap five. Dennis Stilson would reach second two laps
later.
Kuhel would hold the top spot until seven laps remained in the
contest, when Stilson worked ahead. Over the final laps Stilson
was able to maintain a smooth line around the raceway and collected the
victory. It was his first career visit to the winner's circle
after a feature contest. Fast qualifier Michael Gwidt would finish
second. Erik Kawlewski, Kuehl and Andrew Hintz comprised the top five
runners.
The four cylinder feature race would show the patience of 14 year old
Kralovetz as he carefully worked his way through traffic. Avoiding
any dangerous passes Kralovetz would setup each fellow racer for a clean
pass on the way to the front.
Jim Cormack looked to be the man to beat throughout most of the event
running a smooth line around the track. His pace kept him ahead of
several passing attempts and at one point he had built a quarter-lap
lead.
Kralovetz however had worked into second with five laps to go and
quickly sliced into Cormack's margin. Kralovetz patiently closed
the gap with each passing lap, and with two laps to the finish Kralovetz
worked by Cormack for the lead. Kralovetz's victory this evening
completed a sweep of the program after earlier setting quick time.
Cormack's smooth run would set a second place finish. Casey
Koback, Jousha Opper and Mike Oehmichen comprised the top five
finishers.
Racing action at Central Wisconsin's Power Playground, Golden Sands
