Richards Rockets to
Mid-Season Super Late Victory!
Coon Collects First Feature of 2006!!
By Jeffrey Sachse |
June 23,
2006;
Plover, WI -
With ten laps to go current Super Late Model point leader Kenny Richards
was sitting patiently while three other drivers were contesting the lead
in the main event. As they lined up single file, Richards was
first to choose the outside line in effort to improve his position.
That effort was rewarded with a quick trip to the lead, and his second
weekly feature win of the season at Golden Sands Speedway. In the
Super Stock division it was Wes Coon, who placed himself out front of
the main event and then held off the challenges of current point leader
Brian Back to earn his first trip to victory lane after a feature this
season. The 4 cylinder class saw Adam Eckes repel an amazing effort by
Dallas Kralovetz to win that division's main event. The Pure Stock main
event winner has not been determined as of press time as there was some
questions involved with the race winning machine of Jimmy Robinson.
Additional information will be provided on Monday.
Veteran racer Steve Holzhausen and Keith Bohmsach brought the
field to the green flag for the start of the 50 lap Super Late Model
Mid-Season Championship contest. Second year competitor Tim Hintz
found himself in the third spot by the end of the opening round.
Before things could settle in the first and only caution of the event
occurred on lap two, as the machines of Bohmsach and Hintz got together
with Hintz spinning in turn four. The field narrowly missed his
errant ride, by every one of the drivers following avoided contact.
Action resumed quickly and the final 48 laps were contested without a
single slowdown. On the restart Holzhausen had to contend with
young hotshoe Brandon Selle, while Pat Williams held down the third
spot. On the next lap Williams got shuffled to the outside line and
quickly fell back in the field allowing Jason Weinkauf and Mark Eswein
to rocket into third and fourth respectively.
Holzhausen worked hard to maintain the top spot as Selle appeared to
have a faster machine. Selle would manage to find room in the bottom
groove and worked alongside Holzhausen. After several laps of side
by side racing Selle secured the top spot on lap ten, as Holzhausen
settled into the number two position.
Defending champion, Eswein would work past Weinkauf for the third
spot just before the halfway point, brining current leader and the
evening's fast qualifier Richards with him.
At the halfway point Selle, Holzhausen, Eswein, Richards and Weinkauf
held down the top five positions.
The laps clicked by quickly with Holzhausen remaining on Selle's rear
bumper hoping for a miscue. Eswein meanwhile was also seeking a
way to advance, with Richards still in tow. The top four cars
dashed around the high-banked third mile oval nose to tail until ten
laps were left in the contest.
It was at this point Richard's ventured into the outside groove and
the choice would payoff. On lap ten he shot past Eswein for third
and the following laps he managed to nose ahead of Holzhausen.
Still working the top side of the raceway Richards then reeled in Selle.
Selle would hold on to the top spot until seven laps were left in the
contest, before Richards would nose ahead. After a brief battle,
Richards would clear Selle and slowly pull away.
At the finish Richards had a two car length advantage over Selle for
the win. Holzhausen claimed the third spot. Joe Krzykowski
who had been running outside the top five until late in the contest, has
also opted for the higher line around the track and moved up several
spots in the closing laps to reach the fourth position. Eswein
would complete the top five runners in the fast paced event.
Randy Storlie and Brian Weinfurter comprised the front row at the
start of the 30 Lap Super Stock contest. Storlie working the low
groove quickly assumed command of the contest with Weinfurter settling
into second. Coon working the upper groove found himself in the
third spot by the end of lap four.
Coon continued to work the upper groove and found himself in a side
by side battle with Weinfurter for second. Coon would secure the spot on
lap seven, and remained in the outer groove upon reaching Storlie.
The outside line proved to be the fast way around the track and Coon's
momentum allowed him to take the lead on lap ten.
Once out front Coon would slowly pull away from the field leaving his
fellow competitors to battle behind him. Storlie continued in
second, while current point leader Brian Back and the evening's fast
qualifier Tim Plowman sliced through the pack. Back would reach
the fourth position by lap 17, and Plowman made his way to the top five
on the following lap.
A single caution occurred with ten laps to go in the contest as
Weinfurter encountered mechanical problems dropping him from the event.
This left Coon ahead of Storlie, Back, Plowman and Scott Hamel in the
top five positions.
With action resuming Coon went back to building his lead over
Storlie, who had his hands full trying to fend off both Back and Plowman
to maintain second. Storlie however was unable to hold the spot as
both Back and Plowman worked by with five laps to go in the contest.
Out front Coon drove a smooth line around the raceway to maintain his
slim two car length advantage on Back to the checkered. It would
be the first feature win of the 2006 season for Coon at Golden Sands
Speedway. Back would settle for second ahead of Plowman.
Storlie and Hamel completed the top five runners.
The final two events of the night would also have plenty of drama.
In the Pure Stock main event Matt Ciesielski and Andrew Hintz brought
the field to the green flag with Hintz taking the top spot at the start
of the contest. Hintz would continue out front through a couple
caution flags, while Jimmy Robinson worked his way through the pack in
into second as the race moved past the halfway point. Current
point leader Dean Zakrezwski would reach third place as the event headed
toward the closing stages of the contest.
Hintz would hold the lead until five laps were left in the event when
Robinson took the top position and quickly pulled away. However
officials determined Robinson had far exceeded his qualifying time after
reaching the top spot, and the yellow flag waved with three laps to go.
Robinson was moved back two positions for the dash to the checkered
placing Hintz back in command. However when the green flag flew
again Robinson burst back to the front and paced the final two laps to
reach the finish line first. Zakrezwski would take second on the
final lap followed by Hintz, Michael Gwidt and fast qualifier Ron
Grabarski. In post race inspections there was some questions
involving the Robinson machine and the official results will not be
available until Monday.
The 4 cylinder main event saw a starting field of 20 cars present for
the green flag. The race would provide fans with two forms of
entertainment, exciting battles for the lead, and the charge of Dallas
Kralovetz from the tail of the field. Randy Polansky would take
the initial lead of the race with Matt Hansen following in second during
the opening rounds. At the tail of the field Kralovetz was quickly
passing cars easily picking off the slower machines.
A caution for debris on the track on lap four slowed the field with
Polansky still in charge followed by Jousha Opper and Eckes.
Kralovetz has already passed half the field and found himself in ninth.
Polansky's time at the front came to an end when Eckes took over the
lead position on lap seven. Further back Casey Koback and
Kralovetz were charging hard making their way to second and third with
four laps to go. Koback was next to fall to the charge of
Kralovetz as the 14 year old speedster quickly surpassed him with two
laps to go. Kralovetz now pressed hard to close on Eckes but Eckes
had enough speed to reach the line first for the win. Kralovetz
has managed to pass 18 cars during the event to reach second.
Koback would finish solidly in third followed by Polansky and Mike
Oehmichen.
Next week, June 30th, fans are invited to Union Night at the races.
The program will feature a huge fireworks display following the evening
program which will see a full show of Super Late Models, Super Stocks
and 4 cylinders.
