The exhaust fumes hung thick in the air as cars from all divisions
warmed up the track at Golden Sands Speedway. The stands were full on
this muggy June evening, and the promise of a chance at victory also had
the pits packed with anxious drivers. Local unions watched the race from
high above the track in the VIP tower while patrons and employees from
Ida's Tavern enjoyed the view from the Coca-Cola pavilion.
Motors whined to the limits in the ninety plus heat during fast
time qualifying, but only one man from each division was able to claim
fast time champ for the night. Jason Weinkauf in the number 76 Late
Model proved fastest with a solid time of 12.228. Super Stock driver Tim
Plowman drove hard to claim fastest in his division for the eighth
consecutive time this season. J.J. Flick claimed fast time for the
four-cylinder division, pushing his number 26 car around the oval for a
respectable 14.937 time in.
Carquest/Coca-Cola Late Model racing was hot as ever, with Frank
Nitske leading the pack from start to finish to complete and win the
forty lap feature. A tough battle for second place proved Mark Eswein
the victor with Alan Check on his heels to finish third. Jeff Weinfurter
took fourth with the number 76 of Jason Weinkauf finishing up the top
five.
In the Kwik Trip Super Stock division, Roger Stancheck won the
semi-feature race and advanced to the finals. We considered this his
wedding rehearsal as he was married to Becky Brusky in victory lane the
very next day. Cars were nose to tail for the 25 lap feature, every
driver holding tight to his position. But the number 71 car of Brian
Back pushed the envelope and worked his way up from sixth to take the
win. Randy Storly started in first and only lost one spot to Back,
finishing in a respectable second place, followed by Scott Hammel in
third, Brian Weinfurter in fourth and Tim Plowman taking fifth.
Finishing up the feature racing for the night was the fast Coors Lite
four cylinders. Dallas Kralovetz snatched his third first place win of
the season. Casey Koback managed to close in on fellow racers and
mid-pack up to second. Third place was occupied by Kevin Teske, Adam
Eckes in fourth and Torey Nitzsche finishing in fifith.
Racing events were concluded by Fast Lane Johnny pulling out his
wheelie bus and setting a new wheelie record by completing a 1 ½ laps on
the high banked oval. Fireworks lit up the starry June sky above the
track to kick off the festive fourth of July weekend.
Be sure to join us next week for more excitement with the Late
Models, Super Stocks, Pure Stocks and Cruisers. Gates open at 4:30 pm,
