Turzinski takes another CWRA Late
win at Golden Sands!
By Amy Kolo
June 19, 1998; Plover, WI: - Brian Back ended up with the nights fast time and opted to take the Hot N Nows Ultimate Challenge., which is now up to $1,000.00.
Mike Cox came back to racing at Golden Sands, and took the early lead in the late model feature. Bobby Turzinski was right behind him looking to take over that lead. By lap 10 Bobby T was able to get around Cox for the lead, but Bobby had competition to deal with. Smokin Joe Krzykowski was directly behind Cox, working for the top positions. By lap 15 Smokin Joe got around Cox for second. Rex Rossier started moving up the pack at a very fast rate of speed. Rossier slammed around Cox then Mark Mackesy for the third position.
By lap 24 Smokin Joe was able to get around Bobby T for the lead. Bobby and Joe fought for the next six laps. On the white flag lap Bobby T took his lead back. Bobby finished first with Joe in second, and Rossier in third.
Cale Laessig shot out in front in the super stock feature, but it was short lived. By lap five, Greg Gusting took the lead away from Laessig. Fast runner Keith Bohmsach started working for the top positions, along with Dave Pagels. Gustin and Laessig battled it out for the top spot. Finally by lap 15, Bohmsach was able to get around Laessig for the second position. Bohmsach started working on Gustin, but Gustin started pulling further away from the pack, putting him a good two car lengths ahead of the pack. Gustin took the checkered with Bohmsach in second and Laessig in third.
Pure stock driver, Shawn Stelzer had a terrible time in qualifying, when his car got away from him coming down the backstretch into turn three. This put him in front of the pure stock feature. All the other fast runners knew that they had to start fighting hard to get around the slow cars to start working on Stelzer.
As the green flag flew, Stelzer jumped in front with Mike Brooks right behind him. By lap 6 Brooks started having car problems and had to leave the track. This gave Curt Blenker the chance for the second position. But unfortunately it did not last long, Jim Stratton quickly got around Blenker and started pounding the gas hard hoping to catch up to Stelzer. On lap 10 Stratton got loose and Blenker was able to regain his second position back. Stelzer took the checkered, with Blenker in second, and Stratton in third.
The cruisers were back for a slammin, banging, good time. As the first caution came out on the track for the cruisers, track promoter Darrel Bassuener switched the order around. It was now time to drive all the right turns of the track. Some of the drivers actually did a better job going the opposite way around the track. Kampert and Blenker finished in first with Wedde and Cayer in second, and Williams and Hemlick in third.
Golden Sands Speedway is located on highway 54, between Plover and Wiscosn Rapids, WI. The raceway is a third-mile HIGH banked asphalt oval.
