Turzinski tops CWRA Main,
Prietzel takes CENEX Super Truck win!!
By Amy Kolo
April 26, 1998; Plover, WI: - Ground pounding excitement as sixteen Mid-American trucks started the 50-lap feature! Golden Sands Speedway's three super stock trucks also joined the Mid-American truck feature.
Jason Hicks took the lead after the first green flag. Hicks lead only lasted a short 8 laps as he and Leroy Pettis spun coming into turn two. This gave Darrel Bassuener the lead. Bassuener hit it hard trying to hold off Bill Prietzel. Prietzel finally prevailed and slipped around Bassuener.
Bill Prietzel, sure must enjoy the high banks of Golden Sands Speedway. Prietzel won the inaugural event in the Short Track Super Trucks a year ago and came back to win the CENEX Super Truck event today. Just last week Prietzel won the Mid-American Stock Car series race here at Golden Sands!!
Bassuener started slipping back as Kevin Peterson came up to run for the lead. By lap 15, Peterson was able to take the lead away from Prietzel. Lapped trucks started coming into play as Prietzel and Peterson battled it out. On lap 27 Prietzel was able to take the lead, by the very next lap Peterson won it back.
As more and more trucks were being lapped Prietzel was able to take the lead again on lap 38 as Peterson got stuck behind lapped traffic. Prietzel was able to hold the lead. It looked like Peterson was going to finish second, when on the white flag lap Danny Heinritz used the lapped traffic to get around Peterson. The 50 lap feature was one of the most exciting truck races ever seen at the Power Playground. Prietzel took the checkered with Heinritz in second and Peterson in third.
During the Late Model feature, Bobby T was able to fly into the lead right away. Cars scrambled behind him fighting for positions. Greg Weinfurter was fast to catch up, with his brother Jeff not far behind.
Bobby Turzinski the 1996 Golden Sands Speedway CWRA Late Model champ won today's feature event after taking the lead early in the race.
Kirby Kurth was able to get around Weinfurter for a few laps but Weinfurter had the power to hold him off, however he couldn't find the power to get around Bobby T. Kurth started falling back giving the chance to Mike Budleski to fight for the lead. Everyone was trying to catch Bobby T, but he was able to hold on for the win. Greg Weinfurter finished second, Budleski third and Kurth came home fourth.
Greg Weinfurter did his best to run down Bobby Turzinski in the CWRA Late Model feature, but after several attempts to gain the lead he had to settle for a close second place finish!
The Super Stock feature let Putz Braunsky in the lead immediately, with Alan Sansky in his super stock directly behind him. Sansky tried to hang on as long as he could but fast runner Keith Bohmsach was able to slip past him. Sansky started experiencing problems and slipped back in the pack. Bohmsach and Braunsky battled it out.
Bruansky seems to have the power today. Merle Weinfurter got behind Bohmsach in third, but was unable to pass. It looked like Barunsky had it in the bag. Judd Brandl came up from the back of the pack and was able to make it around Weinfurter.
Out of turn four for the checkered Braunsky gave it a little too much, got loose coming out of the corner giving the win to Bohmsach. Brandl took second, Weinfurter in third, and Bruansky in fourth.
Keith Bohmsach a former Pure Stock champion at Golden Sands powered to victory in the Super Stock division, taking the lead in the final corner heading for the checkered!
Slammin' and bangin' in the Pure Stock feature. Jeff Gruber started with an early lead, but about half way through the feature event fast runner Bradley Scholze was able to take him. Gruber slipped into second with Cal Greening third. At the drop of the checkered Todd Radtke was able to take the third position away from Greening. Golden Sands other fast runners Shawn Stelzer and Jim Stratton were stuck in the back of the pack behind slower cars.
Bradley Scholze came out on top in his Mopar powered racer taking the feature win in the Pure Stock division.
The CENEX Mid-American Super Trucks take a 4 wide parade lap prior to the start of their feature. The trucks will return to Golden Sands on Sunday afternoon, May 24th.
