August 20, 1999; Plover, WI: - Fans poured into Golden Sands Speedway for the 2nd Annual Channel 9 WAOW Fan Appreciation night. Fans that made it early to the races received a Golden Sands Mug, Nascar Belt and a T-shirt, compliments of Golden Sands Speedway. Congratulations to the Short Trax Jr. Fan Member of the Week, Jesse Szymkowiak. Andrew Osowski and Beth Behrend were the lucky winner of brand new bikes compliments of Shopko Stores. Brad Fritz won the Wal-Mart Mountain bike. Super Late Model driver # 29 Charlie Schwock gave away a color TV to a lucky fan. Congratulations to David Johnson, winner of the color TV compliments of Charlie Schwock.

82099a.jpg (15542 bytes) Chris Wimmer (#52) last a few positions during the opening laps of the Super Late Model feature event, but he found the momentum to take the lead on lap twelve of the third lap event, and he went on to score the win this evening.

Jeremy Lepak once again pulled off fast time in the Super Late Model division. He opted not to take the Hot n’ Now Ultimate Challenge which was up to $700.00. "The points race is just getting a little to close, and it’s coming up to the season championship", stated Lepak.

Ouch!  Kurt Waush (#63) had just taken the checkered flag in the Super Late Model semi-feature when he and another car made contact.   This sent Waush into the turn one wall.  Waush had a stiff neck from the incident but was otherwise unhurt. 82099f.jpg (13924 bytes)

M.G. Gajewski started it out with the early lead with fast runner Chris Wimmer right behind him. Todd Stapleman was behind Wimmer working hard to get around him. By lap four the thirty-lap feature, Stapleman was able to pass Wimmer and started working on Gajewski. A few laps later Wimmer grabbed back his second position away from Stapleman. By lap twelve Wimmer finally got around Gajewski for the lead. As Wimmer started pulling away from the rest of the pack, other fast runners started making their way to the front. Mark Eswein, Scott Beyer, Jeff Weinfurter, and Burton Brown all started moving up, vying for positions. Eswein started working on Gajewski for the third position. With just three laps to go, drivers started racing hard stealing positions away from each other. Wimmer took the checkered, with Stapleman in second. Eswein was able to get around Gajewski for the third position.

Chad Brundidge ran away with fast time in the super stocks. Chad opted to take the Letter Perfect Challenge which was up to $650.00. Former pure stock racer, Jim Stratton and Terry Schramm put up an additional $100.00, if Brundidge could start from the back of the pack and take the win.

First career feature win!  Jim Cormack (#7) set the pace early in CWSSA Super Stock action.  He then set a steady pace ahead of the field to earn his first trip to the winners circle after a feature event. 82099b.jpg (14341 bytes)

Jim Cormack jumped out in the lead during the super stock feature. Merle Weinfurter and Mike Doughty were directly behind him looking to each take a shot at the lead position. Doughty was able to make his way around Weinfurter for the second position. Fast runner Cale Laessig moved up and around Weinfurter and started working on Doughty. Weinfurter started experiencing problems with his racer and started losing positions back.

Hard chargers, Keith Bohmsach and Jason Kirsling started making their way up the pack to join the party in the front. Not a lot of change in positions, especially since no caution flags came out. The last five laps started showing change in positions, when lapped traffic became an issue. Cormack was able to hang on to his lead and take the checkered, with Laessig in second and Doughty in third. Good job to all super stock racers for running their feature from green to checkered with no yellows!

82099d.jpg (12122 bytes) By a matter of inches!  Jeffrey Gruber (#26) won the Pure Stock feature by less than a foot over a hard charging Anney Turzinski.

The points battle in the pure stock division continues! Mike Brooks started out the night a mere seven points ahead of Marv Flick. Both drivers fighting hard for the end of the year trophy. By the end of the race night festivities, Brooks was able to pull ahead of Flick by a total of 21 points. Flick plans on surpassing or at least getting closer to Brooks on the next week of racing since there is only two points races left of the season.

Jeff Gruber took the lead right away in the pure stock feature with Roland Kuhn and John Matthews right behind him. Anney Turzinski who keeps getting faster and racer year after year maneuvered her way around Matthews for the second position. By the half way point Matthews was able to regain his spot. Flick, who started strong in the race, started losing positions to his rival Brooks. Both racers raced hard trying to get ahead of each other. On lap nine a caution came out. Gruber kept his lead, but Turzinski was able to take the second spot away from Matthews on the restart. With five laps to go Gruber ended up with the checkered and Turzinski in second. On the very last lap Brooks was able to pass Matthews for third position.

A time to relax!  Dean Fisher (#55) and Dwayne Vetrone did a "twin spin" acrossed the finish line backwards at the checkered in Legend Car action.  Fisher fought hard all race long to earn his trip to the winners circle. 82099c.jpg (13767 bytes)

The legends were here once again with a great race and an amazing finish! Local racers fought hard to take the lead position at there home track. Dwayne Vetrone and Dean Fischer, both of Wisc. Rapids fought hard for the lead. As the checkered flag fell, Vetrone and Fisher got into a tangle a couple feet in front of the start/finish line. Fisher spun around and ended up finishing and winning the race coming across the line backwards! Vetrone finished second with Ben Pettis in third.

82099e.jpg (9889 bytes) Off track!  Wesley Krause (#21) got off the backstretch and hit the tire protection barriers that protect the scoreboard.  He never hit the scoreboard but damaged his cars on those tires during the running of the Super Stock semi-feature.

Don’t miss out this Friday night, August 27th for the Rainbow Casino night at the races. This Friday Golden Sands Speedway will be giving away the 1990 red corvette. You must be present to win!

Our racetrack is a high-banked 1/3 mile asphalt oval featuring Super Late Models, CWSSA Super Stocks and Pure Stocks. The track is located between Plover and Wisconsin Rapids, WI on Highway 54.
