March 26, 2002; Plover, WI -  Golden Sands Speedway, Central Wisconsin's Power Playground is about to begin an ambitious 2002 season of excitement on the high-banked third mile paved oval.  Run under the direction of the Bassuener family for the past seven seasons, the track has undergone steady improvements. Unveiled this year is a new pavilion area just outside of turn four.

The track will open it's gates for the first time in 2002 when it hosts an open practice session on Saturday Afternoon April 13th, which will run from Noon to 4 p.m.   A pit pass will be charged for those in the pit area but the grandstand admission if FREE for those wishing to catch the first glimpse of the new cars this season.  In the event of rain the practice session will be held at the same time the following day, on Sunday, April 14th.

The first racing event of the 2002 season will be the Ice Breaker 75 on Sunday Afternoon April 21st.  The show will feature the Wisconsin Challenge Series Late Models, Super Stocks and 2-Man Cruisers.  The event marks the first of two appearances at the track for the Wisconsin Challenge Series which will contest another event, the Legends of Yesterday 75 on August 11th.  The highlight of the season opener will be a $1,800 to win, 75 lap Late Model main event.  Also on the program for the day are twin 30 lap qualifying races, which will set the balance of the 22 car feature starting field.

A large contingent of Super Stocks will also be on hand, running for a $400 top prize in a 35 lap main event known as the Conqueror's Cup.  Like the Late Models the Super Stocks will run qualifying races.  The 2-Man Cruisers will round out the day in a special points show which will tally points for the class at other WCS events to name the Wisconsin State 2-Man Cruiser Champion. Pit Gates will open at 10:00 a.m., with qualifying at 12:30 p.m., and the first race catching the green flag at Noon.  In the event of rain the entire program will be run on April 28th.

The regularly planned event for April 28th, barring rain at the WCS race, will be the first point show of the 2002 season for the Golden Sands Speedway championship chase.   The show will feature three classes of racing as Super Late Models, Super Stocks and 2-Man Cruisers take to the track.  As an added highlight the afternoon will conclude with Spectator Races for Street cars. Like the prior week pit gates open at 10:00 a.m., with qualifying at 12:30 p.m. and racing at 2:00 p.m.  The show will have a complete lineup of heats, semi-feature and feature events.

The weekly Friday Night racing will begin on May 3rd and continue for the next 19 consecutive Friday evenings.  Each show will feature Super Late Models and Super Stocks, with other support classes in rotation.  The May 3rd race will include as an added attraction, the 4 Cylinder division and the first round of the Iron Man Competition.   New for the 2002 season, the Iron Man Competition is a series of novelty events for strictly stock automobiles, where the drivers compete in various contests of speed and automobile control.  During the season four such contests will be held, with the championship decided during the annual "Eve of Devastation" which will conclude the action for the year on September 13th.

The weekly Friday Night program will have the pit gates opening at 4:30 p.m., with Time Trials held at 6:30 p.m., and racing starting at 7:45 p.m.
