Communications presented the evening's racing program at Central Wisconsin 's Power
Playground. Several drivers made repeat visits to victory lane adding to their
season win total. In the 40 lap Late Model main event, defending track champion Mark
Eswein set fast time and then came from deep in the field, making a late race pass on
Chris Weinkauf to earn his second feature victory of the 2004 season.
Mark Eswein (#71) scored his second Super Late
Model feature victory of the 2004 season at Golden Sands Speedway.
Mark Eswein (#71) runs the low groove to pass
Chris Weinkauf (#75) for the lead in the Super Late Model feature race. Eswein would score
the win with Weinkauf a close second.
Dean Lapointe (#15) came from deep in the field and charged to a fourth place
finish. He is shown doing battle with Keith Bohmsach (#24) for position late in the
Burton Brown (#07) grabbed a pair of victories this evening winning his heat race
and the feature contest.
Mark Eswein (#71) started out the evening with
fast qualifying honors in the Super Late Models.i.
Galen Manternatch (#5) who scored his first
career feature win a couple weeks ago, earned his second victory on the season in Super
The battle for second went down to the wire with Tim Plowman (#80) working past
fast qualifier Tim Hintz (#1) for the position in the Super Stock feature..
Tim Hintz (#1) nailed down fast qualifying efforts in the Super Stock division.
Scott Strigel (#46) set fast qualifying honors and later came back to win the
feature in Pure Stock action.
Brad Guralski (#16) led the Pure Stock feature until the closing laps when Scott
Strigel (#46) made the pass for the win.
Scott Stelzer (#2) scored a popular victory by taking his Volkswagen Beetle to
victory lane after the feature in the 4 cylinder class.
In the Super Stock division, Galen Manternatch, who scored his first career
feature win a couple weeks ago, wasted little time in making a return trip as he captured
his second victory this evening. In the Pure Stock division Scott Strigel set fast
qualifying honors and then came from dead last to score the victory in a wild Pure Stock
main event. Scott Stelzer wrapped up the evening by fending off Mike Oehmichen and
earning a popular win behind the wheel of his Volkswagen Beetle in the 4 cylinder
Mark Van would set the initial pace in the Late Model headline event with Jason
Kirsling and Keith Bohmsach giving chase.
Kirsling would nose ahead of Van for the lead prior to the first of two caution flags.
The first of which occurred on lap five when Greg Back had a flat tire and was
unable to exit the racing surface fast enough to keep from forcing a caution period.
Racing resumed only briefly before Tim Sauter made contact with Jason Weinkauf, sending
Weinkauf spinning on the backstretch. Both were able to continue the race from the
back of the pack.
Underway again, Kirsling went back to the lead with Van in tow. Chris Weinkauf
would work the low line past Bohmsach to nab the third position by the tenth circuit.
Chris Weinkauf was having a good deal of success in the low groove and would work
past Van for the runner-up spot on lap 13.
Van stuck in the outside lane quickly lost ground falling back in the field.
Kirsling's reign at the front came to an end on lap 15, when Chris Weinkauf powered to
the outside groove and worked his way past for the top spot. As the same time
Eswein, who had worked his way forward from the fifth row, had reached the third position.
Eswein continued his charge working the bottom lane past Kirsling for second on lap 18,
as Chris Weinkauf continued to set the pace. Eswein worked at cutting Chris
Weinkauf's lead with each passing lap and the pair would duel for the top spot just past
the halfway point of the race.
With 15 laps to go in the contest, the lead changed hands for the third time, as Eswein
hugged the low line to slip past Chris Weinakuf for the lead. Unhindered by any
slowdowns during the remaining laps Eswein would run to a comfortable victory. Chris
Weinkauf would hold fast to second to the checkered flag.
Jeff Weinfurter worked his way into the third spot prior to the halfway point of the
race, but was unable to close on the lead duo and settled for third. Fourth place
went to Dean Lapointe who turned in a solid performance dispite a car which began to
develop mechanical difficulties late in the race. Lapointe had come from deep in the
field to reach fourth, only to have his engine begin to go sour in the waning laps.
His machine held together to get him to the finish line in fourth, just ahead of a fast
closing Allen Check who won last week's feature contest. Jason Weinkauf recovered
from his spin early in the feature to reach sixth.
The Super Stock main event saw Matt Raykowski and Mike Brooks tussle for the top spot
through the opening circuits. Raykowski would gain the upper hand pacing the event
during the early stages of the race.
The first yellow flag flew on lap five when Dave Neitzke looped his machine in turn
one. The green returned with Raykowski, Brooks and Galen Manternatch holding the top
The race would have an unexpected turn of event on lap eight. Manternatch had just
worked by Brooks for second, when Raykowski, the race leader, slowed and pulled into the
infield, turning the lead over to Manternatch.
For the rest of the distance Manternatch would set the pace running to his second
feature win of the 2004 season. Tim Plowman would mount a late race change moving by
fast qualifier Tim Hintz in the closing laps to reach second, but he was unable to
seriously threaten Manternatch for the lead, settling for the second spot. Hintz
would hang on to finish third, while Brooks and Scott Hamel who came from deep in the
field would complete the top five finishers.
The Pure Stock feature contest was spiced by four cautions during the first four laps
before the event settled down to some serious racing.
Brad Guralski would set the pace until the closing laps when Scott Strigel would work
his way into the top spot. Once out front Strigel pulled away for a comfortable
victory. Guralski began to slow noticeably with three laps to go as his ca began to
show signs of smoke. Current point leader Eric Nelson would work his way past with a
pair of laps remaining to finish second. Guralski would nurse his ailing mount home
third, just ahead of Andrew Hintz. Dean Ashbacher completed the top five runners.
The 4 cylinder main event turned into a showdown between Scott Stelzer and Mike
Oehmichen during the closing laps. Stelzer had a comfortable lead until five laps
remaining in the race, when a caution flag bunched up the field.
In the dash to the checkered Stelzer had his mirror full of Oehmichen who waited for a
single mistake to try and take the lead. Stelzer would turn flawless laps enroute to
the checkered taking a popular win with his Volkswagen Beetle. Oehmichen, the
division point lead would settle for second ahead of Torey Nitzsche, Thomas Masephol and
Next Friday evening four divisions of racing will take to the high-banked third mile
oval as 2-Man Cruisers will join a full program of Super Late Model, Super Stock and Pure
