Bohmsach 1st to Win 3 at Golden Sands
By: Mike Barrett
Keith Bohmsach of Wisconsin Rapids had the 2nd best starting spot tonight alongside polesitter Mark Mackesy of Wausau. He turned that good fortune into a win, remarking later that he was "lucky to make the show". His comment was based on a bad qualifying effort (according to Keith) that led to a time corresponding to the front-row start. He also said he knew Mackesy would give him a fair shot, and sure enough, a few laps in, Bohmsach was able to edge into the lead, but not until Mackesy had spent several laps straining for the top spot. The top 3, Bohmsach, Mackesy, and Chris Weinkauf of Merrill all spent the first 20 laps in their respective positions, until Mark Van Read more

Kenseth Wins Big 8
Ross Kenseth made the most of his 1st feature win in the Big 8 series Friday Night at Golden Sands Speedway in Plover WI. Starting a few spots back in 5th did not seem that far back, but in a field separated by mere tenths, Kenseth had to rely on more patience than might be expected of such a young driver. As he worked his way past racers like Steve Dobbratz of Rio , Wi, Ken Richards of Montello and in the final 10 laps Appleton's Jim Duchow, Kenseth showed a smooth style reminiscent of another Wisconsin racer; his father Matt. Duchow did his utmost to maintain a lead he almost kept the entire race, but the #25 of Kenseth had a very fast run into turns 3 and 4 and nearly literally ran up the tailpipe of Duchow's red #27. The resulting contactRead more

Frank Nitzke Finally Finishes First at Golden Sands
Berlin's Frank Nitzke will be the first to say it; for all the times he has led a late model feature this year, you would think he would have a win by now. Not until tonight has he finished as the leader. Handling bugs and engine gremlins have kept him from a win, but tonight he broke the ice with a racy piece of work that thrilled the biggest crowd of the year so far. It looked at first like feature # 2 for MG Gajewski, as he positioned himself early for a run away from the pack. Gajewski started just behind pole sitter Mark Mackesy and took advantage of Mackesy and John Totzke Jr. to lead by lap 5. Chris Weinkauf, Tim Hintz, and Nitzke all hung around to race in the top 5 until lap 24, when AJ Kania spun, bringing out the 1st caution of the 50 lap feature. By lap 30, it was Gajewski, Hintz, Nitzke, Chris Read more

Bohmsach Doubles Win Count at Golden Sands
Keith Bohmsach of Wisconsin Rapids led every lap of the 40 lap feature at Golden Sands Speedway Friday night, earning points that currently tie him for 3rd with Merrill's Chris Weinkauf. It was also his 2nd win of the year. The start of the race almost took out the first few cars, but after a lap 1 melee cleared, 8 laps were run before a light rain delayed the event for about 50 minutes. Several helpful Pure Stock and Cruiser Racers aided in the drying effort, and the Pure Stock feature was run to ensure the surface was ready for the slick-tired Late Models. Lap 8 posted Bohmsach at the front, and it looked like he had a fast enough car to maintain his spot for a while. 11 laps later, Ted Reichenberger and AJ Kania brought out a caution, tightening the field. The second Read more

Gajewski Gains on Field with a Win
M.G. Gajewski of Wausau WI took a second-row start and turned it into an unchallenged win Friday night at Golden Sands Speedway. He lined up on the inside right behind Frank Nitzke of Berlin and was passing for the lead by lap 5. The next 35 laps were all Gajewski's with other Late Model racers straining to reach him. Jordan Thiel of Appleton started outside on the front row, and spent the next 20 laps trying to fend off the likes off Keith Bohmsach and Mark Eswein, both of Wisconsin Rapids. Read more

Gress Wins With Rare Wire to Wire at Golden Sands
Monte Gress of Neillsville WI enjoyed one of those rare racing nights Friday June 6 at Golden Sands Speedway in Plover WI. He drove a 40 lap Feature with no real challengers to lead a field of 19 Late Model competitors to the checkered flag. After a nearly three wide start at the outset, it seemed as if there would be drama at the front for the lead, but Gress took off, putting many car lengths between his #80 car and 2nd place Frank Nitzke of Berlin WI. Weinkauf Races to 3 Wins in 6 Days
Chris Weinkauf is reminding everyone in Central Wisconsin that he is a racer’s racer. Driving two different cars, he has won three Features in six days, and the addition of a Fast Time on opening Night at Plover a few weeks ago has many area fans saying that the elder Weinkauf brother has serious racing skills. Chris has ended his May of racing with a from-behind win at Golden Sands Speedway Friday May 30. Frank Nitzke of Berlin streaked away from the field at the start, and not long after led by nearly ½ a lap. Weinkauf started 3rdRead more

Chris Weinkauf Defends Home Turf in WCS Opener Memorial 100 at Golden Sands
Chirs Weinkauf of Merril WI made a big change this year. He is driving a car fielded by the Kirslings and has slowed down not one bit. After setting fast time two weeks ago on the opening night at Plover’s Golden Sands Speedway, Chris started this Memorial day race with hopes of finishing well. 100 laps later, Chris Weinkauf settled for nothing less than a win when he rolled across the start/finish many car lengths ahead of Josh Bauer of Random Lake. Mark Eswein smoked past several racers in the late laps to pick up 3rd after posting fast time. Steve Holzhausen of Bangor passed perhaps as many cars as anyone to position himself 4th, and Andrew Morrisey of DeForest finished a solid 5th after leading early. The brilliant sunny day offered a strong crowd a feature marred by only 2 cautions, and great racing from a field that was as competitive as any seen racing anywhere yet this year. Eswein Works a Win to Warm up for Challenge
Mark Eswein says he has been "making do" with a car that hasn't had much for improvements since last season. Either his Late Model was extremely good to begin with, or time spent with family and friends in the off season has sharpened his racing skills again. Whichever it may be, the number 71 of Eswein hugged the inside groove and motored past some fast racers to pick up the 2nd Late Model Feature of the year at Golden Sands Speedway Friday night. Starting on the outside row was no help at all, as Eswein got backed up a bit before he found a slot to race in behind Eugene Gregorich. Pole sitter Tim Hintz, Jason Weinkauf, Gregorich and Eswein all lined up along the bottom for a few laps until Gregorich had trouble staying there, sliding back to 6th after 20 laps. Early race movers were Jeremy Lepak and Steve Holzhausen, along with Kenny Richards and Chris Weinkauf. At the halfway point Hintz seemed poised for an easy win with a respectable lead while Weinkauf fended off Eswein. Mark found his way past Jason by lap 30, and the final 15 laps were led by Eswein after he eased past Hintz. Major Read more

Duchow Returns and Drives to the Front
Story by: Mike Barrett
Not only did Jim Duchow of Appleton Post the fastest lap in qualifying Friday night at Golden Sands Speedway, he made short work of a fine field of Limited Late Model racers to win his 2nd Feature race in a row. The last Late Model visit to Golden Sands for Jim was also a victory celebration in the veteran’s pits. Tonight in a new car with a new number in a different class, and a fresh May breeze blowing, Duchow simply dominated the night, starting 9th in a field that included names like Holzhausen, Schumann, and Kenseth. Duchow narrowly avoided being involved in an early caution on lap 4 that took out 2 cars ahead of him, and he lined up 3rd on a restart Read more

Bohmsach Finally Finds the Front in Golden Sands Opener
Story By Mike Barrett
Keith Bohmsach of Wisconsin Rapids topped a large field of Late Model racers Friday night with a long-awaited Feature win. 3 years of Late Model racing and only his 2nd win on a Friday made this a sweet one, especially after an off-season of changes and experimentation. Bohmsach confided that “we didn’t know if all the stuff we did would work”, but the payoff was a fast car that was challenged only briefly by Frank Nitzke of Berlin, until the #18 of “Fast Frankie” suffered a carburetor problem mid-race, finishing 4th. The start looked like it was going to be a close race, with Bohmsach Read more

Wheelock and Green Win the Night, Spritka and Berg Sprint to 2007 Cruiser Championship
Starting the Eve of Devastation at Golden Sands Speedway the Points-Leading Combo of Spritka and Berg set a winning tone by setting fast time fully 3 tenths of a second ahead of the next fastest qualifier. Their 8 point lead going in obviously spurred the pair on, starting 14th on the field and appearing in the top five by the halfway point. A competition caution with 10 laps to go saw a quick shift up front, Floistad and Floistad leading briefly until they gave up the lead to a blazing-fast #73 car piloted by Wheelock and Green. The Floistad car had problems, and the final five crossed the line with Wheelock and Green amidst lapped traffic taking the checkered. Spritka and Berg easily won the points battle with their 2nd place finish. The road-warriors of Kampert and Kampert scored another Read more

Horstman Holds off Eswein to Win Final Golden Sands Feature
By: Mike Barrett
Blake Horstman of Bangor took a 6th place starting car to the front in a mere 10 laps of the 50 lap Late Model feature at Golden Sands Speedway Friday night to capture his first Plover feature win. Jeff Weinfurter started on the pole looking for win #2, and Burton Brown’s best chance at a win this year looked like tonight with the 07 car outside the front row. A couple of early cautions set the field to single file restarts, and Brown quickly lost spots as fast as Horstman gained them. Lap 10 was the move of the race as Horstman determined to pass Weinfurter, using most of one lap to complete the maneuver. Troy Nelson of Antigo and Mark Eswein put on a show for a few laps while points leader Jason Weinkauf was obviously taking care in the middle of the field. Weinkauf only had to start the feature to gain his first Read more

Derek Gress Grabs Win From Gregorich
By: Mike Barrett
Derek Gress and Eugene Gregorich put on a 20 lap show during the second half of the Golden Sands Speedway Carquest/MADA Super Late Model Feature that fans will be talking about for a while. Monte’s boy started on the outside of row 2 and obviously had a fast car that rolled into the lead by lap 15 of the 40 lap event. Point leader Jason Weinkauf looked poised to extend that lead when he appeared in the top 5 in those same 15 laps. Mark Eswein and Mark Van brought out a caution on lap 21, with Eswein exiting the speedway and Gregorich lining up behind leader Gress for the restart. During the final 19 laps Gregorich and Gress raced literally inches apart; side by Read more

Eswein Wins on Werner Electric/Wisconsin Valley Night
By: Mike Barrett
Mark Eswein is always a threat to win on any given Friday night at Golden Sands Speedway, yet many fans may be surprised to learn that his first victory in nearly two years came tonight. Mark posts the fast time often enough, with 4 so far in 2007, and many times fans are treated to a show of passing from the former Golden Sands Champion, but this elusive Feature Win took 23 months and 363 days. Eswein Started 10th on the field and was lucky to avoid disaster when a lap three fracas between Jeff Weinfurter, Blake Horstman and Frank Nitzke brought out a red flag. Nitzke bore the brunt of damage when his car was spun off the track and Horstman Read more

Gregorich Doubles Feature Win Count and takes WYTE Ugly Truck Night at Golden Sands
By: Mike Barrett
Eugene Gregorich obviously likes to race, almost as much as he obviously likes to pass other cars. In his last 3 points races he has passed 26 cars to get to finishing positions of 2 firsts, and a 9th after starting 16th. The driver of the #14 car started 12th tonight in a field of returning veterans and young guns and wasted no time getting to the front. Mark Eswein and Gregorich looked like the pair to beat during the first 20 laps, finding quick ways to slip past other racers. Jason Weinkauf again posted the fastest qualifying lap, but looked mired in traffic early on. By lap 15 Eugene appeared in the top 5 while Jason Kirsling and Burton Brown battled for the lead. By Jeffrey Sachse Friday, July 27, 2007 (PLOVER, WI) – In an evening of firsts, a large crowd was on hand for the McCain Foods Sands 100, to witness veteran racer Steve Holzhausen of Bangor, WI collect his first career Wisconsin Challenge Series victory. Holzhausen who was won numerous races throughout his career has upped his best previous WCS performance, that a second place run in the series back in the series finale during the 2003 racing season. Lepak Sizzles to Schierl Night Top Spot
Jeremy Lepak appears at Golden Sands on occasion and winning has been the result more often than not. The Wausau driver and current track record holder has been here 6 times, and finished out of the top 3 but once. Winning 3 races outright, including a big Memorial Day WCS event has shown that Jeremy has the skills and the support of a team that can put a winning effort together. After a 6th place qualifying run less than a 10th of a second behind Quick Timer Frank Nitzke, Lepak started on the outside of row 3. MG Gajewski had a great start to run out front early, leaving several drivers to deal with each other, resulting in lap after lap of side by side racing. The first lap almost had two racers in the back get tangled up, but they sorted things out, and the first caution was on lap 8, Read more

Gregorich finds Detjens Memorial night memorable with a feature win
by Mike Barrett
Eugene Gregorich used to drive from Kewaunee to race at Golden Sands Speedway. Now the drive is about 2 hours shorter, and his more frequent appearances at the Plover track have paid off with consistently higher finishes and now a feature win tonight. At first it appeared Burton Brown intended on winning his 2nd Main Event of 2007 by charging into the lead of a 5- lap feature. That lead lasted 22 laps, with no real challenge until Gregorich passed Brown after starting 9th. The lap 25 break occurred on this historic night, when the familiar purple restored #25 car was brought out to lead the field to remember the fallen and beloved Wausau racer Larry Detjens, who passed away in 1981. The final 25 laps started with Gregorich on point, Brown, MG Gajewski, Ted Reichenberger, and Steve Gress as the top 5. Back in the pack, there were raging battles for spots, as Chris Wimmer driving a borrowed car from Burton Brown passed 3 wide on Read more

Lepak Speeds to 2nd Win of 07
Jeremy Lepak visits Golden Sands Speedway on Friday night and after a 3rd row start made his way to the front of the Late Model field in only 17 laps. Never looking back, he streaked from the field, winning by nearly a straightaway. Tim Hintz and Jason Kirsling dueled up front, while the rest of the top 5 jockeyed for position. Lepak had to deal with a group of fast racers, including Derek gress, Keith Bohmsach, Jeff Weinfurter, Kirsling and Hintz. The Hintz car seemed to fade a bit, and Tim wound up 8th. After Lepak took the lead, Jeff Weinfurter and Kirsling battled, Kirsling just edging Weinfurter for 2nd. 4th place for Brandon Selle kept him in the points, and Blake Horstman made the most of a 12th starting spotRead more

BURTON BROWN TAKES SLM FEATURE WIN!
Burton Brown of Dale WI made a front row start count when he won the Union Night at Golden Sands Speedway June 29. His only real competition for the feature win seemed to be Tim Hintz of Nekoosa, who did not let Burton’s cagey restarts rattle him at all. A lap 7 caution followed by the exit of John Totzke lined up with Hintz following Brown, never letting the leader’s bumper get more than a few feet away. Read more
