Races were held this Sunday due to the misty, rainy, cold weather on Friday. Where else but in Wisconsin can you have a rainy cold 50-degree day, then two days later have humid, hot, 94-degree weather?
Fans put on the sunscreen and came out to see the 15th Anniversary Season Opener, under the ownership of the Bassuener Family
Chris Weinkauf driving the Kirsling #99 Super Late Model took fast time for the opener, with Jim Sauter Jr, driving the Coon #51 Late Model taking second fast. The Late Model feature started off with a caution right away sending the 20 of Reichenburger and 05 of Sch einoha into a spin. As the cars realigned the 66 of Van took the lead with Sell and Sauter Jr. right on his heals. 66 Van started losing ground and fell to the back of the pack giving the lead to 98 Selle, with 51 Sauter Jr quickly taking over. Lapped traffic started factoring in, but Sauter was able to keep the lead to the finish with Selle coming in second and 99 Weinkauf finishing up in third.
87 Colin Reffner shined once again as he displayed as he did so many times last year that fast time is his thing! New to Golden Sands Speedway, 8 John Zuck took second fast. 43 Kyle Davis took the early lead in the Super Stock feature with 82 Roger Peterson right behind him. Reffner was about mid-pack but moving up fast! By lap 10 he already moved into the second spot behind Davis. Davis was able to fend Reffner off for the win. 19 Dean Zakrzewski took third, with 78 Scott Hamel in fourth.
A great class to watch is the Pure Stocks! Last year’s Season Champ, 16 Kyle Gennet took fast time, as he did so many times during his championship year. 91 Caleb Marzofka took second in time, right for his Grandpa, Marv Marzofka’s birthday! 29 Brent Weiland started out in the front but was overtaken by 26 Jeff Gruber, Gennet was moving up fast through the pack looking for the top spot. Marzofka wanted the win for his Grandpa’s birthday. Marzofka moved up to second, but Gennet maneuvered around him. Marzofka fell back to fourth, with Weiland fighting for third. By lap 12 Gennet was able to get around Gruber for the top spot. With five to go Marzofka finally found his way around Weiland for the third spot. Gennet took the checkered with Gruber in second and Marzofka in third.
Cruiser sliced and diced around the track. 17 Berg & Berg took first, with the 69 Cop Car of Kalata & McIntee in second, and 21 Ciesielski & Rodriguez in third.
Golden Sands Speedway and it’s drivers and fans would like to thank old time racer Marv Marzofka a very Happy Birthday.
