Friday Racing July 16th
Sauter, Capek Win Again, Zakrzewski Breaks Ice at Golden Sands by Mike Barrett JIm Sauter Jr. chalked up his 3rd Late Model win at Golden Sands Speedway Friday night. Chris Weinkauf started next to Sauter, but needed 39 of the 40 lap Feature to catch the Tomah racer, and just one more lap would probably have resulted in a Weinkauf win. Sauter benefited from traffic that allowed the inside row to move to the front quickly, and he jumped into the lead past Jim Duchow on lap 11. Rene Sheinoha spent some time leading, until Duchow got past. Weinkauf shuffled back as far as 6th before he started making gains, and by the halfway point, Sauter and Duchow had settled comfortably into 1st and 2nd, with Brandon Selle hassling Duchow occasionally for the runner-up spot. A lap 21 caution bunched the field, and Weinkauf snuck past Selle, and into 3rd by Lap 25. Meanwhile, Mark Van, Jason Weinkauf and Fast Timer Chad Selk were in a pitched battle for 7th, 8th and 9th. Lap 34 was Christmas in July for Weinkauf, when another yellow situation packed the field for a 6 lap dash. Weinkauf's tremendous run on Duchow put him in 2nd, and on the final lap alongside Sauter, nearly completing the pass at the finish line. Behind Sauter and Weinkauf's close finish Duchow, Brandon Selle and Chad Selk made it to the top 5.
After the initial report, it has been revealed Jim Sauter Jr's car failed Tech inspection resulting in a disqualification. Full race results will be amended.
Kyle Andrich finally posted a Super Stock fast time, but suffered gearbox problems to struggle to maintain a top 10. Roger Peterson and Dean Zakrzewski began in the front row, with Peterson fighting for the lead, but getting quickly shuffled out of position, eventually suffering from damage that sent him into the pits. Zakrzewski led early, and never looked back, as Brian Weinfurter and Colin Reffner put on one of the best racing displays in recent memory behind Zakrzewski. Ryan Hinner raced along with the top group of four, never losing touch, but never gaining ground. Reffner narrowly edged Weinfrurter for 2nd, as Hinner maintained 4th. Scott Hamel drove a great race to 5th after starting 10th.
Pure Stocks continued to build their burgeoning class and a full feature field included two drivers from a B Main that went nearly five wide in earlier racing. Mark Kalata looked like he may run away with the win, but after Brent Weiland passed Kalata on lap 6, four other racers whizzed by. 6 laps later the Capeks, Ben and Jake moved into the lead, with the #40 of Ben just ahead. Jake was attempting an outside pass when Ben's car broke loose and spun, putting him to the rear. Jake took the lead on lap 12, and continued to the checkered flag. Kyle Gennett drove hard to get to the front after qualifying quickest, and posted 2nd. Caleb Marzofka and Brent Weiland finished ahead of the gamely racing former leader Kalata.
Wisconsin Sport Trucks visited, and Jake Boldig nearly lapped the field of 6 other racers, leaving fast timer Todd Kostichka the only other truck on the lead lap.
The Cruisers all saw Berg and Berg drive by (again) to easily win the feature, Poeschel & Poeschel posted 2nd and Wheelock & Helbach crossed the line alone in 3rd.
Many Late Model racers came out of Wausau Thursday night with damage, no less than 13 hours of work went into the 7-11 of Jason Weinkauf to make it ready for Friday at Golden Sands. Brandon Selle's group also re-attached plenty of body parts, and they both made it clear they owed a lot of thanks to their teams.
Next week should be another good of racing, with Rapids Police Support Youth Night Mega Bike Giveaway! (New and Gently Used Bikes) Impact Rewards Night! SLM, SS, 4CM&S*, and Cruisers
