The point battles heat up even more this week at Golden Sands Speedway

By: Jordan Clark and Brandon Aschenbrenner

It was the rain make-up night at Golden Sands Speedway on Friday night. Starting off the night was the Super Stocks, which saw Brian Weinfurter (24) picking up fast time. After that, Jeff Nowak (79) and Phil Malouf (32) picked up heat wins. The feature event had tons of action as the top 3 drivers in point standings battled it out. Hard racing action between Weinfurter and Nowak brought out a yellow and caused some damage to both cars, but after some pit work, both cars were able to continue. A few laps later, contact between Weinfurter and Malouf caused some damage on those cars, which ended Malouf’s night, but Weinfurter was able to continue. When the checkers flew, it was Ben Capek (81) taking home the feature win.  John Zuch (8) was 2nd, Matt Raykowski (6) 3rd, Weinfurter 4th and Zakrzewski (19) rounded out the top 5. The points were shaken up but currently Weinfurter is 1st with 482, Nowak 2nd with 471, Malouf 3rd at 468, Raykowski with 442 in 4th and 5th is Zuch with 440 points.

The Late Models were back in action with 25 cars showing up to race. In qualifying, Eugene Gregorich Jr. (14) picked up fast time. Ted Reichenberger (20), Kyle Genett (7-11) and Mark Eswein (71) all picked up wins in their heat races. The top 2 drivers in the 11 car B-main advanced to the main event and they were Joey Garjoni (79-Frank Kreyer) and Jeremy (J.J.) Schulz (1). The feature event saw some close but also clean racing action and for the second week in a row went caution free. Eswein took home the win with Mike Egan (44), Frank Nitzke (18), Jim Sauter Jr. (51) and Gregorich finishing in the top 5.  Heading into the championship night, Sauter is the point leader with 430 which is 17 over Gregorich in 2nd with 413, Egan 3rd with 399 and Nitzke 4th at 392.

The pure stocks were back as well with 18 cars checking into the pit area. Chad Weis (0) picked up fast time, Richard Dunn (20) picked up the win in heat 1, Cody Thompson (15) won heat 2 and Karl Genett (16K) picked up the win in heat number 3. After some exciting side by side and 3 wide racing action, Brent Weiland (29) picked up the feature win with Hunter Cramer (66) finishing a strong 2nd, Kyle Genett (16X) 3rd, Weis 4th  and Travis Volm (76) ended 5th. The points got jumbled up quite a bit and settled with Weiland first at 460, twenty points ahead of 2nd place Karl Genett at 440, Carter Kauth (97) 3rd with 439 and Volm 4th with 432 points and one more event left on the season.

In the 4-Cylinder Stock class Kelly Sankey (88) can simply not be slowed down. He picked up fast time, and won the feature again, even with 225 extra pounds added to his car. The heat races were won by Dillon Mackesy (93) and Cheri Kurth (7). Finishing the well contested feature behind Sankey was Nikki Coulthurst (17) in 2nd, Jeremy Kemnetz (5) in 3rd, George Seliger (06) 4th and Phil Malouf (32) 5th. The point standings find Sankey on top with 671 points. Kemnetz is 2nd with 573, Lucas Betro (1) 3rd with 493, Coulthurst with 485 in 4th, and Seliger rounds out the top 5 with 477 points.

The next racing action at Golden Sands Speedway will be Friday August 30th with Season Championship night featuring the Smage Brothers will also be on hand putting on an exciting show for all the fans.
