Golden Sands Season Opener Fills Night With Action!

No lack of cars gave a loyal crowd plenty to cheer for tonight. 6 classes ended with one of the most thrilling Super Late Model features in recent years. Darren Jackson qualified 1st in a field where the top 10 were separated by a scant .23 seconds. A beer can re-draw for the top 8 positions. gave Darren 1st draw, and he picked the lucky #1. Levon VanDerGeest picked #2 with his 5th draw. Derek VanDreel won heat 1, and Colin Reffner picked up his 1st checkered flag of the year with heat 2. The 2 younger front row feature drivers set off racing deep into the night after a rain delay pushed the program back. VanDerGeest looked like he was stapled to the Jackson ride the 1st 17 laps, holding on until the 1st caution. The pair restarted the same way, and another caution came 4 laps later. Levon was a nose ahead after the scored lap, and took advantage of the inside lane to edge ahead of Darren. Kendrick Kreyer lined up behind Levon, and as the race went green the next 29 laps, could not mount a real passing effort. VanDerGeest won, just ahead of Kreyer, Gabe Sommers, Colin Reffner and Travis Volm.
Super Stocks fielded a diverse dozen, Darrin Salo posting quick time. Adam Raykowski surged to heat 1 win, Kaleb Hurless with heat 2. The feature saw Rachel Kallas lead early, but after an early restart Jim Cormack took a healthy lead that put him in victory lane. Adam Raykowski raced his way to 2nd, ahead of Jeremy Flees and Kallas. Brian Weinfurter was 5th.
8 4-cylinder modes raced, Scott Hoeft was the fastest. The single heat ended with Cameron Kemnetz 1st. The feature was action-packed, and at the end Shawn Kemnetz edged Hoeft. Brad Abt, Cam Kemnetz and Greg Blount followed.
The 4-cylinder stock class brought 14 cars, and Heidi Cuff threw the fastest time down .003 ahead of Garrett Srachota. Ashley Schoone post the heat 1 win, Strachota grabbed heat 2. In the hotly-contested feature Ashley got out front, and even after clearing the field, Eric Breitenfeldt could not manage a pass, with Ashley winning. Dawson Knutson was 3rd, Strachota and Cuff rounding out the top 5.
Pure Stocks brought the best field seen in a while, young Avery Linnerud was fastest. Veteran Bo Benish was the heat 1 winner, Tony Ciano led heat 2. Benish continued his good night with the feature win, closely followed by Breitenfeldt, Brandon Riedner, Ciano, and Scott Riedner.
6 Cylinders also brought a nice group, and Karl Gennett was the quick timer. Pat Literski narrowly won heat 1, Gennett wins heat 2. Gennett swept the night with a feature win, Matt Moore, Josh Zacharias, Patrick Reeves, and Ken Wrege all trying hard for 2nd place. Kudos to some great fans who stuck with us during a rain delay and the resulting chilly night!
Racing next week again, May 17th!
